I have installed a Lite-on SHM-165P6 dvd burner into my pc expecting to be able to play/edit RAM discs recorded on a Panasonic VCR/DVD recorder and then re-burning them onto -R discs.

When opening a recorded RAM disc (From the Panasonic) on the pc a folder DVD_RTAV appears containing three files -

VR_MANGR,BUP
VR_MANG,,,
VR_MOVIE

Double clicking on any file this message appears -

unexpected file format

Do I need to install drivers or more software (Nero 5 installed) to be able to access these discs?

you can try to extract those file to the hdd using dvd decryptor and if it detectes them as dvd video compatible maybe you can demux the video and audio streams and author them if you wish. tell me then if it worked or not.

I installed DVD decrypter, then accessed the RAM disc and DVD decrypter saved the disc info to the HD as the following 2 files -

DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER.ISO (4.26G:cool:

DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER.MDS (8.0K:cool:

I then selected the ISO file and tried burning to a -R disc, which resulted in an error/failure message and the disc ejected. When I checked the -R disc to see if anything had been recorded the same files as my original RAM disc were on it -

VR_MANGR,BUP
VR_MANG,,,
VR_MOVIE

Any ideas as what to try next???

and thanks for the post

You missed off the file extensions of the files on the RAM disc (your PC settings?). Assuming VR_MOVIE is VR_MOVIE.VRO just rename it to VR_MOVIE.MPG. You can them just copy the VR_MOVIE.MPG file onto a -R or -RW disc.

I'm no expert on this and there might be smarter ways of doing this, but the rename trick works for me.

Editing is much harder and some people say it not realy possible with the original RAM files. For simple editing it's best to use the DVD recorder.

I suggest that you use -RW discs until you get the hang of this because you'll end up wasting a load of -R discs (I did).

I have eventually copied a RAM disc onto a DVD-RW via the pc hd using TMPGEnc encoding software and NERO. It is a slow proccess but the results look good.

The TMPGEnc software is a 30 day trial version downloaded from their site.

Thanks again for the posts.
