Freeview’s popularity shows no signs of slowing as new figures show that the digital terrestrial platform signed up more than half a million new customers over the first quarter of the year, reports Deborah Bonello.

More than half a million new households tuned into the Freeview platform between January and March – the same number bought into the new service over the previous quarter, which was over the Christmas period.

The new figures were revealed by Ofcom senior partner Ed Richards at the Westminster Media Forum Consultation on Public Service broadcasting this morning.

Richards also revealed that digital television penetration in the UK is continuing to grow steadily.

Over the last three months, the number of digital television households in the UK grew from 50% to 53%.

The number of multi-channel homes in the UK (including cable analogue) rose by nearly 20% year on year, and now stands at 57%.

The announcement from Richard’s comes ahead of the publication of Ofcom’s latest quarterly report on digital television take-up, which is due to be published later this week.
