Raspberry Pi Saves the Day

I recently upgraded my adsl modem router to a separate modem and separated router.

The router setup was a breeze using Windows pc, that included flashing the firmware to a friendly one.

Went on to set up the modem, try and login in to the modem to set it up for my connection, using my main pc, tried several browser, but no joy, so I tried on my "aircraft" pc and still no joy, thinking it might be a 64 bit issue, I booted my old 32 bit machine and still no joy.

Getting quite desperate at this point, my Raspberry Pi happened to catch my eye.

I loaded a fresh memory card into it, used the Pi plugged directly into the modem, and set it up, thankfully.

I am now thinking of using a Pi as "desktop" pc now, I will keep an eye out for one in the new year.

Tried it with B+. Painfully slow browsing. Perhaps a Pi3 will be better.

I was just glad I could configure the modem with my pi, I was very close to sending the brand new modem back.

None of my windows 10 pc's would run the config wizard x86 or x64.

Not tried surfing on it, as mine a ads-b plotter at the moment.

I keep the latest img file for the pi in my documents, so I was able to write that to memory card and use that.

It's a separate router and needs a adsl modem plugged in via the wan socket.

That way the router can "login" to the modem and set the port forwarding etc.

But you can setup the port forwating in the routers setup screen, you don't need any modem if you have a router

I have adsl modem this acts as a gateway, and turns pppoa in to pppoe, the separate router then controls the the port forwarding, the qos, the vpn, and a few other things.

The router on its own cannot connect to the adsl service. That's whay I needed the separate modem/gateway.
