Hi

I am about to buy a motorised satellite system (do n't know which one yet) - any help appreciated. Before I do, could someone tell me more about MPEG-2 4:2:0 (PAL). I have seen on Satelliweb about these transmissions including football and concerts. Do they come through clear and are they illegal or what? What would be a suitable receiver to do this?

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.

4:2:0 is "normal" ................ it's 4:2:2 that can only be resolved by a limited number of Receivers, thus providing another route for Feed Providers to protect transmissions from mass exposure at minimal cost.

IIRC MPEG-2 4:2:0 is the standard mode for SD transmissions. It's MPEG-2 4:2:2 that's used (or used to be used) for outside broadcast links that you need a special receiver for.

EDIT

Beaten to it!

MPEG-2 4:2:0 is the normal standard for SD. Probably you're referring to 4:2:2 which is often used for feeds. If you use a pc tv-application, no problems to watch 4:2:2 provided it's not scrambled :)

Whats the actual advantage of 4:2:2, Is it better quality?

It has a greater colour resolution. The human eye is quite insensitive to shades of colour compared to shades of grey and so this is knocked down for normal transmissions. Presumably they transmit it as part of a feed on the princoiple that you can take out the excess but can't put in what's not there.

Boxes like the F3 will record 422 transmissions even if they can't display it, the file can then be played using VLC, not that that is much use for a live event! Just a shame the middleman can't be cut out and have the signal streamed directly to VLC or simultaneously access the recording file via a PC.

I use the Elgato EyeTV Sat Free plugged into my iMac for 4:2:2 feeds. Just pop the loop out from the TM5402HD into it. Probably not the cheapest solution.. but it works.

Hey! I also have the Elgato EyeTV SAT Free... does it work fine with an iMac for 4:2:2 feeds? I mean, without TM5402HD. What about BISS encryption? Can it be passed if I have the key? Thank you, I'm a new SAT TV user!
