Can anyone who knows anything about the law actually answer this question?

It just seems a bit odd that sky aren't allowed to transmit hardcore material, yet anyone in the UK can get a set up very easily to recieve Hardcore from Hotbird etc.

I have read the thread

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satelli...annels/8283-ofcom-adult-broadcasting-r18.html

which goes into detail about what happend back around 2000/3, as I understand it, the "proscribing (banning) foreign services" has been abondoned. Did that mean people were prosecuted before then for recieving hard core programming from European satellites?

However does that mean it is perfectly legal to recieve hard core services from Europe or have they been "decriminalised" or silently tolerated? Aren't being legal and being tolerared/decrminalised two different things?

They are loads of online companies selling smart cards for channels like private spice and s_x view HQ, which I presume means the govt gets a tax cut from every sale in the UK.

Someone please shed some light.

I don't know the actual legal situation, but I take the stance that it wouldn't stop me subscribing to European mature content channels even if it was spelt out to me as totally illegal.
But then, maybe I'm foolish.
Yes, of course I can live without them, but the risk of being caught/investigated seems very small. Maybe I am naive, though.

The channel Extasi (or its former name) which was 'proscribed' was harder, I think, than any of the current channels. I didn't see it but I think it may have shown pissing on people and quite rough s_x.

It is not illigal to bview Porniography in the UK it is only illigal to transmit hardcore mature content.

Therefore all transmissions from non UK countriescan not be controlled by the UK Government.

That is why it is currently not illigal to buy / sell hardcore mature content subscription cards in the UK, because it is broadcast from outside of UK.

take a look at melonfarmers dot co dot uk to get a feel for the current state of censorship in the UK. From 26/1/09 possession (not distribution) becomes a crime. consider also that the government have given legal rights to minority groups who actually base their relationship on anal s_x!!

:-rofl2 Whats that got to do with censorship? I think the answer to my question is a pretty weak argument.

I take it you are referring to the bill mentioned here.

I dont agree with this myself, As far as I am concerned. The man who killed that woman was probably looking at violent mature content because he was that way inclined and he was going to do what he did either way, I dont think that seeking out these images will make a well adjusted person turn into a violent s_x fiend.

This mans arguement is probably the closest to my own opinion.
Speaking as a psychologist who has taught for nearly 10 years the alleged links between violent media and aggression, I think we need to take a step back here. Despite popular assumptions that watching violent images 'causes' aggression, the evidence (around 1000 published studies) that it does is contradictory and far from conclusive. It is one thing to say that a deeply disturbed and dangerous person may seek out violent mature content to fulfil their deviant fantasies: however it is an entirely different matter to say that normal, well adjusted people will be inspired to commit violent crimes if they watch such images. If we wish to avoid such tragedies happening again, we should take a wider look at how people become so disturbed that they lose the ability to judge right from wrong and commit such atrocities. A debate over whether such mature content is banned or not is therefore a side issue as it does not adequately address this matter.

I haven't looked into it in any detail at all, but as I understand it, this applies to mature content considered obscene or violent; not all hardcore mature content.

Are you referring to homosexuals? If so, they do not 'base their relationship on anal s_x'. Being mature content is about emotional and physical attraction to men, a part of which may involve anal s_x, but not for all mature content men.
Some women also enjoy anal s_x, but I don't know, anyway, what your comment has to do with the topic. I suspect you just took a chance to air your views on homosexuality.

The intention was to illustrate what I thought was an example of government hypocrisy. Clearly I missed the target and will return to only commenting on technical matters in future.

The reason satellite viewers can receive and watch over air adult material from Europe inthe UK, is because the British Goverment signed up to a EU agreement. Which in effect made any broadcast signal given a legal licence to broadcast in any Europepean country legal to watch in the UK, even though UK Broadcasters are not allowed to broadcast over air such content. Such is the petty mindness of the British Establishment and their obsession to censor everything. Even UK daily news is not news but News management.
