Finally got around to getting shot of two Creda "Slimline" (Are they hell!) that we inherited when buying our gaff 15 years ago.

Only kept them as an alternative heating source lest the oil boiler become forked, but we haven't actually used them for around 10 years as we've now got a couple of portable LPG heaters instead.

I realised I'd have to dismantle them in situ in order to remove, bit by bit, the considerable weight of the bricks but, immediately upon removing panels, hit upon the potential issue of asbestos. Checked the model number against various lists and ascertained these were 1984-87 models, manufactured since asbestos was outlawed.

Nevertheless, the insulation crumbled into dust when disturbed and I removed two bin bags full of the stuff!

All dismantled now, awaiting disposal at the tip in due course.

But one task that remains is removal of the upper mounting plate which has been pinned to the breeze-block wall using some meaty form of fastener which has no screw head and looks more like a rivet head. I assume these have been driven deep into the wall and I have no idea how to remove them.

Any suggestions (sensible .....)?

We removed ours a couple of years ago, I didn't think of taking the bricks out until I had done 2 of them, nearly killed me! We still have the brackets on the wall I am ashamed to say, I would suggest grinding them off.

Without actually seeing them, grinding off sounds like the way to go to me as well.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Those "rivets" sound a bit like Terrier nails.

Probably need to grind them off as suggested, but you might be able to drill 4-5 small holes around each one, scrape out some of the breeze block and then pull them out with a pair of long-nosed pliars or small molegrips.

"Proper name" is "annular nail" (Oooh Matron!) - like these - often called Terrier nails because, like a Terrier down a fox-hole, once nailed in then they are very difficult to remove!:-lmao

^^^^^^

The Annular ones are similar, but the heads look as if they are clouted up against a brass cup/washer, but the head and cup are actually one piece.

I'd post a pic, only Bill Gate's goons have disabled my Windows Camera!

Give me a few mins and I'll try my Android Tablet.

Nice idea ..... I think that the bracket itself can be teased off, as it's fairly thin plate. The slots should warp nicely with a bit of judicious manipulation.

That'll give me easier access to the "nails".

Tap them left/right / up / down a number of times to widen the hole until they can be pulled out.

Very much like removal of the cast iron drainpipe securings of old, appropriately called 'pipe nails', wear away the material they have been bound into...
Before that, try drilling like I suggested earlier - should make it easier to tap a nail from side-to-side (etc.).
PS: sorry for the "delay" - been setting the TD110 again - going well from 31.5W (only checked that far as yet) to 53E :)

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Drill the heads off, hammer the remaining nail flush, apply some polyfilla (or similar), sorted...
