Turn clockwise first to break the dirt in the thread

Another method for removing that nut which might work if you can get close-enough to it from "end-on" to the clamp thread:
with a minature hacksaw and a fine metal-cutting blade, carefully saw through the nut in a direction that is parallel to the thread, and as closely as possible to that thread.

That should weaken the clamping force of the nut on the thread, and the local heating generated by sawing should help as well.

Plenty to go on there! Okay the first thing I'm going to try is soaking it oil over the weekend. If that nut can come off then I'll wire brush the rust off and replace all nuts with new ones that I bought today.

I bought mine at a hardware shop in the next town to me about four miles away. It's your old-fashioned kind of shop that has been there for many decades.

Well I'm not familiar with that store you mention, but this shop I use is a cracking little place! In my town we did have a hardware store, but it closed down last year after 5 years. Shame, but it happens. Just to mention, I have started soaking that rusted nut in some 3-in-1 oil and can see rust coming off already. There is hope that I can still use those U clamps and will remove all rust from them with a rotary steel wire brush. I'm also going to coat the current mounting pole with hammerite to protect it.

@Tony1A

Just had a thought regarding the "U-bolts": to make additional support clamps for the motor used with my Gibby, I used some chosen from those shown here, and specifically those shown here - if you can find something suitable, the critical dimensions would be "B" which is the centre-centre distance between the legs and "C" which is the length of the legs themselves.

We just call them "D.I.Y." ("Do It Yourself"!) shops or "superstores"
Well, I spent more time in USA than UK, that is why I call them " Home Depot style" . In my country we have several store brands which sell fasteners. Of course they have different names, but style is same. Besides, there are soooo many online shopping possibilities that it is not a problem to buy nuts&bolts . galvanized or INOX. Prices are more or less same, so no need to speak about that. If you need just 10xM8 nuts who cares if you pay 1 GBP or 2 bucks!
@Tony1A If you wish I can buy any U-bolt, any nut, any bolt galvanized or INOX, and later send them to you. That will cost you price of the fasteners plus shipping.
