I was told that the above has been discontinued? Just when I thought it was the one to go for. I noticed a post from wolsty about 'uncertain times ahead' with new encryptions etc.

Without backup from the manufacturer would it be folly to buy this receiver now?

Once anybody has 'updated' the receiver to the more popular firmware available, Im sure its no longer covered by the manufacturers warranty

In the same way that Magic Cams are soon to become under scrutiny from the broadcasters (pushing the Control Access Providers), the freedom of making a box of tricks that can be used to bypass payment of subscription is going to get a lot more difficult

CH,

With this particular receiver Ive noticed that certain retailers are selling it as patched anyway? So anyone would still have the 1 year standard warranty if something goes wrong. Has it been discontinued?

Nothing wrong with selling it as patched as it still needs a card to decode PPV channels (unless there was a Freecam type upgrade)

The removal from manufacture came about as the license from France Telecom to Samsung is (or was) for a Viaccess embedded solution.

The receiver when patched is no longer as the license intended, and I believe the firmware for this has allegedly been proven to come from an inside source, hence the uproar and discontinuation from manufacture, similar to the Humax story

CH,

I think Im getting the drift. Its a bit of a joke isn't it, for a company the size of samsung I expected to see some product info for the receiver. But they are all dead links. It seems they have had their hands slapped and shrugged their shoulders about the product. Hells teeth, its all so fickle.

What really annoys me is all the people who have bought the reciever in good faith and now have had a big un curled on them. Or was it directly aimed at a 'specialised' market?

Who knows, who cares.;))(-)(

Samsung is not just one company

There are MANY MANY different parts of the empire, a lot of them are direct competitors in the satellite kingdom.

This is just one product from one tentacle of the octopus which has got a name of notoriety for wandering a bit. If just one hand is slapped it means bugger all.

Think about what Samsung make in other fields (and not just consumer electronics) and you will realise what France Telecoms ruling sounds like to them.

Jack shit I guess?

It's taking me a while to get the big picture (no pun intended....although it is (ironic isn't it)). To coin a kind of phrase 'Its only TV but.....in hindsight Im not that bothered about it really'.

Whoops going off on one then nearly:)

When one piece of marvellous satellite equipment gets a pasting, theres always another ready to take the lead

Its an interesting business, technology changes, but the same drive is there to get the most out of that little box on the TV.

Ten years ago nobody would have believed you could get over 2000 individual channel streams from your location, let alone one orbital slot

Its getting to be a case of what cant you get now !
