I invested in a Kathrein EXIP 418 SAt>IP server a couple of months ago in the hope of getting streams wirelessly on my laptop around the house / garden, but I honestly regret the purchase. The streams just aren't stable more than a few metres away from the router, even with direct line of site the picture will break up (note: a direct ethernet cable is fine) . I have tried multiple routers, multiple client devices and multiple locations (some rural, without any wifi interference from neighbours) and the problem persists. Setting longer latency helps a bit, but not much. No other setting change seems to fix it. Having read this (Sat>IP WiFi Hotspot | ESA's ARTES Programmes and see pic for solution), I think the problem is a lack of forward error correction suitable for wifi. Sat>IP servers only take the DVB-S/S2 stream and send it as ip packets. Sky Q must use a more robust system as, unlike SAT>IP, the server does the decryption so may be adding in more error correction.

Anyway, just a warning for you guys. Hopefully I am missing something, but don't think i am. SAt>IP is great if you can go fully wired though.

Ouch. How much has it cost you to find this out?

What is the antenna on the Katrein server box , and do you have an option of setting an alternative frequency ?

My Satellite Setup
OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC
My Location
Deep in the Boonies in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
How fast are the WAN/LAN ports on your router, and the speed of the WIFI? The output on the Katrein server is 10/100/1000 or a Gigabit port, you may be swamping the router's WIFI with too much data at once and the WIFI can't handle it.

They recommend a router with a high speed WAN port (if your just using a router for it alone) or Gigabit I/O on the LAN ports, the one they recommend is called a FRITZ box, it has a Gigabit WAN port, and Gigabit LAN ports, and the speed of the WIFI in "N" mode is up to 800 Mbit/s on the 2.5 GHz band.

Not quite sure what you mean as the sat ip server is connected to the router by LAN cable, it has no wifi.

Thanks, this is useful. This is my router Tenda AC10U AC1200 Smart Dual-Band Gigabit WiFi Router-Tenda-All For Better NetWorking but have tried 4 others. The spec should be more than sufficient, yet i get break-up even on low bitrate channels - e.g. Sky News SD on Astra 19.2 around 3Mbit/sec). Perhaps these Fritz boxes have some special way of handling this type of traffic.

I'm no expert on this system I can only speak by my experience of trying to streaming HD video around the house on an internal network over wifi.

Even one HD video stream struggles to keep up over my router even on 5GHz. It's a very difficult thing to do, add in wifi signal drop off over distance, in my view there is no substitute for having network cable points in every room of the house. Obviously better to do when house is being built or refurbed

I think a big problem over wifi is jitter - i.e. packets arriving at different times.

Sky Q seems to do a much better job - wonder what the difference is.

We do a lot of TV streaming around our farm but with Vu+Duo2 as server and doing transcoding to 480p, also works OK at 720p/1080p, but for small screens like smarthphones can't really tell the difference (with decent bitrate), and it's a waste of bandwidth... + a TPLink CPE210 AP (dual directional antenas). This thing have enough power to maintain the streams as far as 3KM (straight line, tested many times), the farthest that signal go is 5KM (also tested, but very slow)
