Please help
I am new to all of this and am a little confused. I have been told by expats in crete that we cannot get SKY tv, yet I have spoken with SKY SAT who have told me that even though the footprint?! of their covedrage does not cover crete, if I buy a 3.5m dish I should get SKY as the dish will collect the ripples. I am reluctant to spend money on something which will not work. I have tried a normal tv with an outside aerial with a booster and all the local channels are fuzzy/unwatchable. If it is poss to get SKy TV, is there a company which will deliver a 3.5m dish to greece and what other things would I need to enable it to work. Also would there be any chance of getting UK terrestial TV on SKY. Thanks very much, apologies if this is not the right place to ask.

Woah my friend.

There are several points to consider here.

There are 4 (soon to be 5) satellites delivering the "sky tv service" which utilise 8 (soon to be 9) different transmission footprints. Each footprint will be received at a different strength in Crete.

The 3.5m dish is for the Astra 2D satellite - desired by many expats as it carries the BBC & ITV channels. This is probably the most difficult one to get, athough it can be got in Cyprus with dishes around 4m in diameter.

DONT speak to Sky UK - they wont help as you are outside the UK, and will turn off any subscription card you own if they get the merest whiff you are abroad..

Hi
Thanks for this. I will now try and get this elusive large dish and try and go from there. Thanks for your help.

Feel free to ask any more questions as / when they come up. Someone will chip in and answer you. You might want to have a look at some of the Cyprus threads in the sky fringe reception section on the forum - reception conditions will probably be broadly similar to Crete

(Beautiful island you live on - I was holidaying in Georgiopolis a few weeks back :D)

Allow me the following correction: The 3.5m is required for the Eurobird 1 Fixed Beam which weakens quite a lot moving southwards whereas in Athens a 1.50m is enough in Crete it ain't. Although on a 3.5m could appear some Astra 2D frequencies the real sizes used are 5-6m so better forget BBC/ITV anywhere in Crete. The conditions are far worse than in Cyprus.

Although there are quite a lot of large dish installers on the island, i would recommend to get in contact with one of the very experienced doing this job since the 80s:
Antonis Zaharioudakis
Strymonos 11 & Pavlou Mela
Iraklio
Tel.: 2810372800, 6932638776 (mobile)

If you wonder why some people use even smaller dishes like 1.80m, yes Sky UK is receivable but you won't get some frequencies. Which exactly can tell you only local installers.

Analoguesat, how do you get to 8 footprints (+2c to come)?

There's 2A N&S, 2B N&S, 2D and Eurobird (fixed and S1) I make that 7, soon to be 8. What have I left out?

As i found out today Antonis Zaharioudakis has launched a website for his sat store. You can see also some photos of the 6.3m monster dish for Astra 2D on pages 1-4: _http://saloras.gr/index.php?action=12

Sorry Bill - only just spotted this

2A north
2A south
2B north
2B south
2C north
2C south
2D spotbeam
Eurobird 1 fixed
Eurobird 1 steerable 1
Eurobird 1 steerable 2

I make that theoretically 10, although I have to admit I have no idea what the status of the EB 1 steerable 2 is - it may just be used for the German feeds up the top end of the frequency band.
