A satellite television company installer has been charged with theft after police say he stole underwear from a customer.

Ronald J. Westemeier, 40, of Aurora, was charged Thursday with fifth-degree theft, Dubuque Police Chief Terry Tobin said.

Tobin said Westemeier was working at a woman's home. She left to run errands and when she returned she found Westemeier putting a pair of her underwear into his pocket, the chief said.

Tobin said the woman confronted Westemeier, who apologized and returned the underwear to the woman's dresser.

Officers searching Westemeier's truck found several other undergarments, Tobin said.

"He's claiming they were his wife's and daughter's underwear," Tobin said. "But we are looking into the possibility that some of the other undergarments may have come from this area."

No other charges have been filed.

Fifth-degree theft is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
