Hi all

I don't know if I am in the right forum, most here seem dedicated to satellite TV.

I am looking for advice on what equipment I need to listen to the BBC World Service on Intelsat 10-02.

This is a free to air service. I used to listen to the BBC on Worldspace Radio but this service has stopped broadcasting. I live in Zimbabwe.

I know that the Intelsat footprint covers Zimbabwe and the BBC says their service can be accessed from Intelsat 10-02 but they don't say how to do it.

Could anyone tell me what receiver I need to access this service and whether it will pick up any other radio services from Intelsat 10-02. I principally need this receiver for my car (FM transmitter needed)

My thanks in advance.

It was all going so well until you mentioned the car.
I can´t see you being able to access a satellite transmission from a moving car. But I´ll let others who know much more than I do.

Hello & welcome to the forum. BBC World service radio is carried on the 10-02 C-band eastern hemisphere beam (frequency 4025R).

Exact signal power on the hemisphere beam is difficult to come by but the minimum is 37dBW

If this is correct you would need a minimum of a 2m dish and C-band lnb and receiver.

Longwave wont work, too far away but how about a small mobile HF receiver like a Target HF3? Africa is one of the few remaining areas that the Beeb still target with shortwave and Ascension should be a good signal for most of the day, either on 15400 or 17830kHz. Not exactly hi fidelity although if you pass the audio through some parametric EQ it can sound pretty good.

Worldspace radio broadcast from satellite in the L band and was easily receivable with portable and mobile receivers in cars etc - similar to the Sirius and XM satellite radio services in the United States which work in the S band. In the L band directionality of the aerial (not a dish) was nowhere near as precise as the Ku bands etc that most people consider as satellite receiving and reception was easily possible across most of Europe, Africa and the Middle East from one satellite with a further satellite covering Asia and the Pacific and a proposed one to cover the Americas. I have a portable WorldSpace radio and the aerial merely had to be within 20 or 30 degrees of alignment. I have just tried my receiver and can confirm that broadcasts have now disappeared. The WorldSpace brand name has been acquired by Vodafone and is now being used by them for radio by mobile phone in India.

Sadly it would appear that there is no easy replacement for this service across Africa with mobile reception.
