Sorry about the vague title, but i don´t really know how best to describe this, I live in a small spainish village, where the street lights go off every night at 1am to save power. After 1am its very dark and you have a totally clear view of the night sky, you can see the milky way, but most interestingly, you can see satellites. I dont mean stuff like astra, but satellites moving over your head. Anyway, i was wondering how the signal is transmitted to earth and weather it would be possible with a satellite dish to recieve the signal.

Most of them use probably use something like omnidirectional vhf transmissions rather than the directional stuff that requires dishes.
