Hi guys I'm a little confused about the differences between SD and HD satellite equipment. I've read elsewhere about how to receive the BBC HD channel from 28e on my DM7025. I've managed to do this, but I only get sound only as the DM7025 can't decode the HD picture. However, I can stream it to my IMAC and watch it great. My question is, why can't I scan any other HD channels ? Do I simply need a HD tuner, and if so , why can I recieve BBC HD with my SD equipment.

Any suggestions ?

BBC HD is still using DVB-S, as are one or two others (Luxe HD, ITV HD), so streaming is possible with a receiver/PCI card equipped with an SD tuner.

The majority of other HD channels are DVB-S2, needing an HD tuner.

I can record the BBC HD streams on my DM7000S and then copy the TS files to my computer. However when I try and play the transport streams back on the PC using the VLC media player, the video is very jerky. Is this because my PC isn't fast enough (Core 2 Duo E4300 processor + 2GB RAM + Radeon X1650 graphic card)? Or is there another explanation like the VLC settings? If it is a question of processing power, what would I need to upgrade the processor to?

Incidentally, DVB-S2 can also be used to transmit standard definition TV programmes; it is not only for HD. There's a good article explaining DVB-S2 on the EBU site: _http://www.ebu.ch/en/technical/trev/trev_300-morello.pdf.

I'd have thought that spec would play the HD ts without issue. I stream BBC HD to my imac and without making any changes in VLC it plays fine. Maybe its the upper hand OSX has over windows ? I dunno... I'm pretty sure it will be performance related problem in some shape or form.

easysat: It is the X1650 card, upgrade to Nvidia 8800 or ATI HD and the playback will be smooth. I had the X1650, 80% CPU on HD, jerky playback while 8800 GTX 15% CPU, no problems on ITV HD or BBC HD.

Thanks for the comment. Yes I am seeing the CPU usage hitting the 70-80% mark, so I have the same problem.

After taking a look at the graphic card specs, I think I will go for one of the ATI HD3850 cards at around £90, as they have a built in decoder for H.264 and VC-1 and MPEG-2 acceleration and draw a lot less power than the Nvidia.
