I've been poking around in the AD3000ip to check out the layout of the LNB switching supply, as I have in the past had failures of a couple transistors due to silly shorts brought on by failure to make sure the cabling from LNB to f- plug is sound (I'm always swopping and re-terminating connections).

Q904 and Q909 are in my opinion the most likely suspects to be damaged if a short in the cable occurs for any length of time.

Here's my effort at drawing the schematic. I haven't provided values for the semis, just swop like for like or use any medium power rated transistors.

Always worth trying to keep the old box working - (within its limitations, channel capacity etc). But then I only really use it for dish positioning.

Later receivers than this Echostar have a dedicated LNB switching chip that provides the H/V voltages; this one just uses basic easily available or substitute components.

I couldn't at first work out how the 12V regulator U901 was able to supply the 13/18V to the LNB, as what is normally the ground terminal fixes the output at 12V.

In this circuit this terminal is raised through Q909 to 1V or 6V, which will give 12V+1V=13V or 12V+6V=18V to the LNB.

I was thrown by the fact that the fault I had (shorted Q909) earthed the ground terminal of U901!

Nothing available that I'm aware of except for the power supply posted on this forum. Sorry.

My Trusty AD3000ip refuses to pick up any channels in the upper frequency range, either H or V. Any ideas? I really don't want to junk it!

Could be either a receiver settings fault or an LNB fault: 22 KHz tone achieves band switching.

I see you have other receivers, so you should be able to prove LNB function (or otherwise!) without difficulty.

Other receivers work fine so the LNB is OK - must be the 22khz tone - can anyone point me in the direction of what component(s) I need to replace? - I can solder but my electronics expertise is pretty much nil.

The problem we have is tracing out the circuitry without a schematic of the mainboard to hand.

I can do a check with my 'scope working backwards from the plug when I get the chance, but whether I can pin any one component down that might be your problem who knows.

Thanks Llew - trouble is I would't have a clue where to start. Just love the receiver so don't want to throw it.

If you have a digital multimeter, you can do a quick and dirty check on whether the 22kHz signal is coming from the processor.

Switch to AC and a low scale (2V or whatever your meter has around this voltage).

Locate Q910 (just below the copper heatsink to the left of the tuner).

Place your +ve probe on the bottom pin of Q910. That's the left-hand terminal of the two pins looking 'sideways'. Your -ve probe to ground (chassis).

If you go to Menu - 6 - 1 of your box (Program Satellites) you can then easily switch between high and low band frequencies of your satellite in the TP bar for testing whether the 22kHz is switching on.

You're checking for a 22kHz square wave, which should show around 1V or more on your meter when you switch to a high band channel. Switching to a low band channel should show around zero.

As I say, it's a rough check, but it will confirm whether your processor is actually sending out the signal.

Just do another check first though to confirm that you LNB settings are definitely correct.

**Be ultra careful when checking circuitry in the box - the power supply on the left is exposed, and in particular the heatsinks in that area can deliver a mighty shock! Don't connect your -ve probe to them, only to the box's chassis**

Hi Llew - took your advice and checked the LNB settings - strangely the LNB was set to 'type 8' and the box refused to accept 'type 1' until I did a factory reset which permitted high band tuning on a type 1 LNB. Its this a common fault??
