Outgoing Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says he "failed" after watching his side exit Euro 2008 with a 3-2 quarter-final defeat by Germany.

The Brazilian, who now takes charge of Premier League Chelsea, conceded that Germany had been the better team.

"I am naturally disappointed and frustrated," said Scolari.

"I failed and I wasn't able to achieve the target the federation had set me, qualifying for the semis. Germany were better at the important moments."

Defeat meant Portugal failed to reach the last four of a major competition for the first time since the 2002 World Cup.

Scolari guided them to the final of Euro 2004 on home soil, where they lost to Greece, and to the 2006 World Cup semi-final in Germany, where they were beaten by France.
