A new Balkan service will be launching in the near future.

The Serbian package was on the 23.5E "German beam" (12543V) but according to this article 60cm dishes will be ok in the Balkans which from the coverage maps suggests the package will be moving to the wide beam

EDIT - yup looks like the wide beam will be used - I hadnt noticed the RTS package has moved to 11914H :) Now how the hell do we get the reception equipment for the encrypted services?!

I wonder if this means the channels that launch on 23.5E will end up shutting down on 16E?

Presumably for 150 channels they will need at least 7 or 8 tp's. So what do we have free on Astra 3B atm? Well I reckon there are 15 free tp's atm

Running total of channels

11914H - 19 - - 19
11798H - 35 - - 54
11817V - 31 - - 85
12402V - 36 - - 121

So probably 1 tp more in the near future to make the expected total of around 150 channels.

Blimey Telekom Srbija are really squeezing the channels in! 12402v has almost 50 channels crammed into it now....

The quality must be absolutely awful!

The transponders are configured for DVB-S2 8PSK SR:30000 FEC:3/4 giving a net data rate of 66.84 Mbit/s. On my count for 12402 V, there are 36 SD services using MPEG-4 video, 3 HD services using MPEG-4 video and 4 HD services using HEVC video.

If they used HVEC for all services on the transponder, they could probably get away with a reasonable picture quality for them all, but is seems that MPEG-4 is being used for most SD channels and a few HD ones - probably acceptable reasons for the time being for not going all HEVC right now (costs most likely).

Dragging this thread up almost three years later since the last post, M:Sat TV (as it is now called) has an impressive 51 TV services on 11720 H at 23.5E - M:Sat TV on Astra 3B at 23.5°E - LyngSat

However after reading an Australian TV forum last night, I see M:Sat TV are mere pretenders into squeezing as many TV services into a transponder to make every bit work hard compared to Australian ethnic TV provider TV Plus - all their services are squeezed onto one transponder on Intelsat 19 at 166E with, if my counting hasn't let me down, 84 TV services :-wow with the same modulation, symbol rate and FEC as what M:Sat TV use, thus giving the same net transponder bitrate of 65.13 Mbit/s - TV Plus on Intelsat 19 at 166.0°E - LyngSat

And in case you're curious, the TV Plus website (tvplus.com.au) doesn't allow access from my UK ISP IP address but using an Australian based VPN, their offers start at AU$34.95 a month for 8-10 channels depending on language up to AU$69.95 for the whole lot. Bargain!

* At the current exchange rates, AU$69.95 is approx. UK£39, €47 and US$51.50.
