Can someone help me please. I know nothing about sats so please translate any supersat lingo for an idiot...

I'd like to get SVT Europa in Corfe Castle, Dorset. I think I need a 70cm dish, but might struggle to get planning approval for that, as it is a listed building. O-no

The descriptions says I need a Universal LNB dish with reception via Sirius2, and a decoder which can handle Viaccess 2.6, and a programme card.

I have a small Sky dish, left from previous tenant - would that work?

I believe that SVT is on the Nordic beam of that satellite, so a 1.2 to 1.5m dish would be required in dorset.

Eeek! Had a look at the SVT site and they think 70 is enough? I guess that means the Sky dish is a no-no?

SVT Europa is on the Sirius 2 BSS beam - thats an easy catch in the UK. The rest of the SVT channels are on the Nordic beam.

You probably want an 80 cm dish to give you bad weather fade margin - if the Sky dish is one of the tiddly zone 1 dishes you can forget it - its way too small to be of any use.

Good reception of SVT Europa, Extra, 1 and 2 here. Don't know if there are any more, but this should give you some idea of what's required down there.

I would guess that the sky dish will catch the signal, but will drop out in bad weather (a bit like me using a mini dish here ~ 49dBW).

Sorry about that pixiepea, just assumed that all of the SVT channels were on the same beam, obvioulsy incorrectly. :)

Oh - so you even get the normal SVT channels? Do you have a large dish to get them - and as I have no idea what I'm talking about - can you explain, how do I set the dish to receive them? :confused

I guess all I need after that is just the box and the card which I get from Sweden, I think?

All of you seem to understand what I'm talking about - had a local Sky installer here the other day (for the neighbour) who just dismissed the whole thing. He made it all sound impossible.

As I don't want to climb around mounting dishes myself (as if!) and waving them about hoping to catch something - what do I do to get someone to help me. I've asked two Sky-people now and they really don't seem to want to get involved. Are there people around who specialises in jobs like this?

your local sky installer is only interrested in one thing : sky.
anything else is non-existant for them. Having sait that : getting SVT Europe will probably not be possible by using "sky" equipment.
SVT Europe is encrypted with viaccess 2.6, according to lyngsat : http://www.lyngsat.com/sirius.html
so get yourself a decent dish with a satellite receiver with a common interface, and have it installed by a decent satellite installer. You will then need a CAM and a card to de-crypt this signal. Both the CAM and the card are available in Sweden, so I hope that you have some relatives living there to whom you can turn to .....
