Not usually at home during the day, and i never noticed this in the evening as in all probability, the volume of the TV drowns out the noise. But i am have been working in the lounge over the last couple of days and i've noticed that several times a day, there is this whirring noise coming from the Sky+ HD box. Is this normal? :confused I know they get update signals from Sky time to time but i thought this is usually overnight.

And don't tell me my hard drive is on the way out or i'll stamp my foot. :-O-st

Usually any mechanical ..or whirring noise ..would be the hard drive ..probably reorganising stored programs ..
This can often be reduced by 'cleaning' the drive of any non essential programming..
But ..it is just possible the drive has become noisy ..through use and age.
Considering the amount of use it gets ...this is not unusual ..or unexpected.
Remember the hard drive _is_ in use even when not making a recording ...that is how real time pausing of live programming is possible.

I'd go for the fan: Some boxes are relatively noisy and that situation won't improve if it's bunged up with dust.

I agree ..this is certainly a possibility ...and easily eliminated ..
Run the box with the cover off ..and briefly stop the fan with your finger ..whilst the noise is present ..
If it goes away ...consider yourself lucky ..as this is a cheaper and less intrusive repair.
