Sky Digital & TV Cabo

I'm new to this Satellite stuff, so please be patient!

I am English and would like to receive Sky Digital (from the Astra
satellite). My wife is Portuguese and would like to receive TV Cabo (from the Hispasat satellite); we both live in East London.

Is it possible to buy 1 Decoder box and 1 Dish that will cater for Sky
Digital and TV Cabo?

If so, please could someone tell me the Decoder Box Make and Models (or characteristics) I should look for.

Note: We will buy the Sky and TV Cabo Smartcards from the relevant vendor.

Also, I've read that the TV Cabo Smartcards do not work in Decoders with CAMs.

Is this a big problem?

If so, does this mean that I must buy the Decoder box directly from TV Cabo and get locked in to their pricing model and hardware?

Thanks

Ashley

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-02 AT 06:57 PM (GMT)]Hi Ashley, unfortunately your last paragraph sums up the situation for Sky, you will need a Sky Digibox and one of their cards. I'm not aware of the situation with TV Cabo, but it may well be the same, you will certainly need two receivers whatever the case.

According to BradleyWood Satellites (www.bradleywood.co.uk) You need a dedicated decoder (Nagravision). It also states that you need to have a Portuguese address, fiscal number and bank account - but it can be used anywhere in the EU.The TV Cabo Receiver is £350 and the card is £279 so its not cheap.

I have heard that Sky may have to 'open up their signal' to other boxes other than their own sky digi boxes (something to do with european law)
Obviously you would still have to subscribe etc but I have heard Sky are fighting this as it may make it easier to hack their codes.
Apologies if this is total garbage but there may be a grain of truth in it

You are right in the spirit of the legislation that was produced by the EC, but it would appear to be relatively toothless. Sky have certainly chosen to successfully ignore it for several years and will probably continue to do so on security grounds.

It is possible to obtain a TV Cabo Cam & Card and take out a subscription. The cam would work in any CI digital box.

The card is matched to the cam (similar to Sky) should be possible to do this through a relative in Portugal.

Hi.
The half solution for your problem, i think that i have it.
For TV Cabo, all you need is a dish, about 80 cm, a universal LNB, and, i recommend, the Dreambox 5620s receiver.
After buying this, all you have to do is place the dish facing 30º West, and program the receiver, using a pc, with an image that will emulate the drescambling card. Finally, write the updated codes, in the receiver, and you'll be home free.
How to program the receiver, i recommend that you read T_G's Idiot Guide, in the Dreambox Section.
I've bought my receiver from www.hm-sat.de, for 169€. The site is in german, but use Google's translation tool.
I've also bought from them an Interstar universal LNB, with 0,3dB of noise.

I didn't know that. I said 80cm, because here in Portugal, we are on the edge of the range of the satellite. For our location, the hispasat site recommends minimum 80cm

Hi DHEART,

about the hardware you recommended.. Did you have to extract the boxkey from the decoder? (jtag) Does it have a ci module for pcmcia like magic cam or did you just uploaded a hacked firmware to the decoder?

thanks

Ahhh, no actual boxkey, just the magic of binary....

The dreambox is all software, and all under your control... :)

Hi.
It's like BGonaSTICK said.
It's all done by software, no need for CAM's, boxkey's, etc.
You upload the new software by LAN or COM1, introduce the updated keys and that's all!
More easier, it's impossible!
Read TG's Idiot Guide, in the dreambox section, and if you need any help or have any doubt, just ask. If i can, i will help you.

I´ll probably buy a new decoder. I currently have an ftemaximal(german) ird 600
ap and I bought also magic cam 1.2 & funwafer 4 but there´s no info on this decoder on the internet, so I´ll probably buy a new decoder (dreambox?) Could you please tell me which is, by far, the easiest decoder to program (BRAND/MODEL)? In TGs Idiot guide seems a bit complicated, (duh) especially the LAN part.. and the choice of an image.. (which is the best image, especially for the portuguese nagra bouquet on 30 W?). I also have a motorised satellite dish (30 E/30 W): are there any images that "cover" all of the systems, as in all in one cam? (does this necessarily have something to do with usb card memory?)

I don't generally like to recommend receivers, but I would say that if you want something simple, then the Dreambox should be avoided.

It's really one of the more complicated specialist boxes.

The only other advice I would give, is to pick a popular box with good image/patch support.

Hi

You need a 60 cm dish, a universal LNB (30ºW)and:

You only need to buy a receiver like : Mirage SFT1000, or Neotion 1000S,... just some examples.
Then send me a PM with your e.mail and I send you all the stuff for programming through your PC... No card... no cam.

Tax free if I can say soo..

Regards from Portugal

Hi Paiva,

I've got a similar problem to Aking's, I've tried to PM you but it doesn't work for some reason. My wife would like to watch Portuguese TV. Could you please send me the stuff that i would need on how to programme it through a PC. We've got a Mirage sft 1000. E-mail would be best. Thank you very much! :)

It´s not easy with Mirage, but if you have a dreambox 7000S or the new 7020 ( see http://www.dreambox.net.au/, http://members.lycos.co.uk/dreamerbox/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=1, http://dreambox.sjerom.com/ , and http://www.sat-industry.net/ you have the answers.
