Either way, a box that takes 5 mins to boot????
It is irritating but the Sky boxes are designed to be left in standby (with an optional "eco" mode where it will shut down at night when no one is using it and boot up again into standby in the morning) so the vast majority will never experience the delays expect when rebooting the box.

The problem I have with the box is I don't get very good reception of the EPG transponder (11.778V) in Finland these days so the box appears to be continuously hunting for the EPG data and keeps the hard drive spinning even when in standby. This means the box gets rather warm and wasting electricity, so I tend to force it to power down when I'm not using it (hold the power button on the remote until the light starts flashing slowly) and this stops the hard drive but it does mean having to wait a few minutes every time I want to watch something on Sky...

I´m surprised you have a problem with 11778 V since it is now on the euro beam, we used to have to boot sky boxes on 12129 ( until they shut it down ) then 12207 V.
There is an upside, time to make the coffee/tea and warm up the chocolate croissant:D

It's fine with a proper dish (eg 1.2m) but my apartment balcony can only fit an 80cm on it. Of course in the "good old days" of Astra 2A and 2B north beam, I could pick up 11.778V on a bit of wet string - the standard UK Sky mini dish was fine. But now it's your turn to enjoy good signals...

Or if I leave my box on I can warm it on top of the box....

Good signals? variation on language methinks!

That may leave you with a sticky problem down the road.

Will a Sky+ HD box work then. Or do will I need a sub for the recording part?

A minimum sub of £10 approx per month (Sky+ sub) is required for recording but apparently this option is now only available to those cancelling down from higher packages. Why do you want to use a Sky box - its only advantage over freesat or generic FTA boxes is that it has a full 7 day EPG for all channels (FTA, FTV and sub) whereas freesat boxes only have just over 50% of the FTA channels on their EPG although they do allow sub free recording of all the channels on it?

I have a movie and some more sub, very old since analog days. I have been watching sky since before they started encrypting.

Now I just wanted to know what will happen if I bought a HD box with recording, would it work with that sub or would I have to pay more.

These days a Sky+ (recording) subscription is available at no extra cost to all Sky subscribers but you do need to activate it. Until a few years ago it was £10/month extra.

As the title says from 1st June all Sky Movies subscribers will be able to view/record all the 11 Sky Movies channels in HD without paying the additional HD pack subscription.
Makes you wonder if this is the first move in making a batch of subscribers ditch the SD boxes for HD ones, to help combat CS?

According to the info on the Sky website it should work, of course you will have to upgrade to a HD recording box and contact Sky to advise them your " active " sub card is now in a new box. After that is should all be ok, assuming you have two feeds to the box you should also be able to watch one and record another, from what I understand from the Sky website.

Do put the kettle on when you first get the box though!

If you connect the Sky box to the internet there is no need to phone Sky to pair the card - it can be done from the "hidden" installers menu - however if you are moving from a non-recording box to an HD+ you will need tp phone them to activate Sky+ on your account - so in that case do both with one phone call.

Not by any means the first move, but certainly another stage.

And quite right, too - but the fraudsters will catch up eventually. That said, they've not made much progress in the last 18 months or so, it seems.

From what I understand the 2nd layer encryption only works on the HD system, so as long as SD is still transmitted CS will continue to work?
Anyway, can´t see the point in paying for anything I can watch on Pick or CBS a couple of years later for free:D

Yes, that's the point: Phasing out SD will render CS obsolete. For now.

To clarify the situation a little - from 1st June those subscribing to

Original + Movies - only Movie channels in HD
Original + Movies + Legacy HD pack - Movies in HD and Sports F1 in SD and HD
Variety + Movies - only Movie channels in HD
Variety + Movies + Legacy HD pack - Movies in HD and Sports F1 in SD and HD
Family + Movies - all subscribed HD channels
Family + Movies + Legacy HD pack - all subscribed HD channels and Sports F1 in SD and HD
Sports subscribers will need either the Family pack plus new HD pack OR any pack plus the original legacy HD pack to view Sports in HD

Those subscribing to the old Legacy pack without Sports who do not wish to view Sports F1 channels need to cancel it. Those with the new HD pack without Sports need to cancel it.
