Sky News reaches over 100 million online

Sky News' website doubled its visitors in July as millions went online to check for news on the recent floods across the UK

114,805,137 visited last month, double the 57 million visitors for the same period last year.

On the site an interactive map gave key regional information on the flooded areas and users also sent in more than a thousand flood pictures for the site's online galleries. On Monday July 23 the site received 7.5 million page impressions; the highest figures since the 7/7 London Bombings two years ago - the site’s highest figures with 35 million page impressions (126.6 million for July 2005).

The number of monthly unique users in July 2007 was up more than 58% on last year from 3 million to 4.8 million and the amount of time users spent on the site increased by 15%. In total there were 16.5 million visits to the site last month, up 85% from 8.9 million visits recorded in July 2006.

Deputy editor, Sky News Interactive, Adam Harding said: "More and more people are visiting the Sky News website and staying for longer. Our aim is to attract new and existing users by continuing to develop as the home for breaking news online."

Elsewhere in the company, Sky is strengthening its online team by creating two new posts with a remit to discover the best talent from the web and identify online social trends. The teams will report in to a newly created online content management team led by project managers Steve Jones, Sky One commissioning editor for entertainment and factual entertainment and Carly Crouse, director of web content, Sky Online.

The new positions have been created by Sophie Turner Laing, managing director entertainment and Andrew Hawken, editorial director, Sky Online, tying into Sky's objective of delivering creative content across a range of platforms.

Sophie Turner Laing said: "This is a dream job for those who love to surf the web for fresh ideas. Sky has always been an innovator in the fields of new technology and ground-breaking content and this newly created team will help Sky to remain at the cutting edge of new ideas and developments online.
