I recently received my Sky Plus box from Ebay.

Unfortunately I come from the communal dish brigade and only have a single feed. I therefore bought this splitter from Maplin, as mentioned a few threads below -

_http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=9273&doy=17m9

I understand the point about only being able to record from the same polarity, but having connected the lnb feed to the splitter, the DC pass to input 1 and the other pass to input 2, there's no signal on either!

I've tried switching the 2 inputs round, but still nothing. Putting the LNB feed straight in to input 1 gives a signal on that input - so it functions as a normal sky box - but that's not what I was looking for.

I realise I need to contact Sky to activate the Record function - but could that be affecting the signal?

Can anyone who has got a result with this technique give me some advice?
Do I need something like an SPS priority switch?

Sorry or all the questions! I'm determined to get at least something out of Sky Plus!

Thanks

You really do need a second feed for sky+, splitting the cable as you have found proves to serve no purpose at all. If you have a south-facing window or balcony, you can try to set up your own dish on a tripod, otherwise there's little point in having a sky+ box... :(

Thanks for the advice.:(

I might stick with it and try the SPS smart priority switch for recording within the 4 polarities. I'll let you know how I get on.

Alternatively - could I put the second feed of the splitter into my freeview satellite box and put a cable from the 'out' to the input 2 on Sky+? Would that make any difference?

On a plus note I can pause and record the channel I'm watching:-ohmy

Putting the second feed into another box and then looping through is basically the same as before only you're adding another box into the equation...:)

I have a south facing window on 2nd floor (top floor for my flat). The new build flats I live in were wired for Sky + and even have the second feed on the wall but I have just found out the cables are damaged and apparently they are irreplaceable, hence why I can't get my second feed to work!! If I were to get a minidish would it have to go outside or could it go right by the window (on the south facing side) inside the flat. I know that sounds a bit of a stupid question but thought I would check with someone here. Thanks.

I think the splitter is wrong. Maybe the dc pass is one direction only ,try connecting back to front( the input and output reversed). Or you could get a t-connector with 3 f type connections, its a splitter but direct.

It could possibly go on the inside yes, give it a try. Maybe try it with the window open first to check that you have a clear view and can get a good signal OK.

Who is saying that it has been wired for a plus box? I.e. 2 feeds to each appt.
If you think the above is true , who is saying it is irreplacable?

It may be worth asking a local engineer to check what has actually been done and if it can be rectified.

I would guess that there may well be 2 cables to each flat but the multiswich that has been installed does not have the capacity for all having 2 feeds each. It may be possible to "pinch" a port from one of your neighbours that is not using it.

If the cable is damaged, then it is down to the builders to facilitate an alternative feed, there should be no problem with ports on the multiswitch, as there would be one allocated to the non-working outlet.

Get them to install a Stacke/De-stacker for you, as satelliteman mentions.

Hi sorry you can't get sky+.

You can get dishs that fix to windows. Usually available from camping/ caravan satellite shops.

Also it is possible to get special flat cable connectors that go through windows without drilling so that if you move you can take everything.
The above flat cable would be useful to try the dish in different areas of your flat.

I got cable connectors from e-bay (usa) 2 for £4 including postage.

Nope - you need to run a second cable from the dish to the receiver.
