Sky’s plans to increase its average revenue per subscriber are coming to fruition.

The latest results from the broadcaster show that the number of customers signed up to Sky+, the broadcaster’s personal video recorder (PVR), grew by more than 20% during the last quarter to 79,000.

During the past three months, Sky added a further 150,000 subscribers to its books, taking its total UK penetration up to 6.7 million users and keeping it on track to hit, if not surpass, its target of seven million customers before the end of the year.

The news comes in the week that Sky played down rumours that it is planning to launch a general entertainment channel on the digital terrestrial platform Freeview.

Speaking at the results presentation, Sky Chief executive Tony Ball confirmed the digital broadcaster was considering the option presented by the platform, but that it would be three to four years before it launched a new offering on the platform which already carries Sky News, Sky Sports News and Sky Travel.
