I am thinking about asking a cousin of mine in UK to get a FTV card for me.

Am I correct in my understanding, that if he orders the FTV card from his address, I need to provide him with my digiboxs info shown in the services menu and also get him to tell them that he has just bought the digibox of ebay?

Could anyone please confirm this before I go ahead.

Sounds good to me - as long as your box doesn't have a card already paired - you can only pair one card to one box.

I have an Irish subscription in the digibox at the moment. I'm only after ITV1 and ITV2. Would the card need to paired for these?

Think it does - and they won't pair two cards to the same box!

I have been advised to get a cheap box off eBay and use that to pair it and then use it in the DreamBox.

Ah, I have an old sly digibox tucked away. So, if I connect this up and pair it with the new card, could I then use both in the same box or would I have to keep the two digiboxs connected? I'm sure I read somewhere that you could interchange two cards.

Ah, just had a thought.

I guess I give him the system details from the old digibox?

Yes, but he may not need them until the card arrives, unless they have changed the system since I last heard about it..

Okay, I'm going ahead with this.
These are the instructions that I am issuing my cousin...

---------------------------------

1. Phone Sly on 0870 606 1111. Ask for a Free to view card. (They will then
ask for your address and possibly why you need a card... "you recently
bought the digibox off ebay")
2. They may ask for the digibox information now or if not they will say to
ring again when you get the card to activate it.

Old Digibox info: Manufacturer ********
Model number *****
Version number???? ****** Will this be required?
Serial Number *********
Operating system Version ******** ??? Required???
EPG Software Ver ******* ????Required

Post on to me when received.

--------------------------------------

I haven't got the info from the old box yet, so using examples from current digibox. I assume as there won't be any card in the old box when I connect it later today I won't need or get the info marked with ??????s.

Sorry do dampen you plans kleefarr, but I'm pretty sure ITV2 isn't available on a FTV card. I think it's a Sky subscription only channel on satellite. Still you will get ITV1

Woops – I was on holiday, that's my excuse.

Sky's Freesat website doesn't have it on the list of channels available, maybe someone should tell them...unless it is just a ploy to get people to subscribe to Sky.

Either way I suppose that's what I get for looking up one of Sky's websites for up to date or accurate information.

Good news anal. Oh better not shorten it to that! ;)

Good news analoguesat. :)

Either way, do the instructions appear correct to any of you? I am slightly pessimistic. Things like this normally go tits up were I'm concerned!!!

Actually, an after thought. I remember trying my Irish Sly subscription card in the old box a couple of years ago and it wouldn't work, "This card is not authorise for this digibox" or something like that came up. Are you sure that the FTV card, once paired with the old digibox, will work in the current digibox?

Your instructions are fine, but before you do anything, make sure your old digibox has the latest software on it or else the card may not activate. If you havent used it for a long time then you might be too far behind.so connect it up now and force an upgrade or leave it on for a couple of days and it might "catch up",or not.

Oh no.. this is getting more complicated by the day! :(

(would that still be the case if my cousin in UK activates it with sly before sending it to me?)

Would I have to provide the details with the question marks next to? (???)

What should I try first, the forced upgrade or leave it on for a couple of days?
The forced would be preferable as wifey would probably start nagging me if she had to do without her "sly" for two days.

To do a forced upgrade, am I correct in thinking that before plugging in, I hold down the power button? I hope it works, I'll be gutted if it doesn't. I was keeping the old digibox for matters such as this.
It was last used with a sky subscription 2 years ago, does that sound too long?

Power off - Is this just standby or unplugged?
Keep pressing - hold down or press repeatedly?
Pressing back up - Which button is that?

Sorry about all the questions, not done this before.

Thanks.

Unplug the digibox from electric supply,
press the back up button on the front of the digibox, and keep pressing it(hold down continuously) while you plug the power on,and keep pressing it until you see four coloured lights light up on the digibox.
At the same time you might see on the tv screen a message saying"updating software, this may take ten minutes,do not switch off".Usually if it is succesful the box will switch itself off (to standby)before or up to ten minutes.then switch on and check the software(press services,4 then 5 for system details)compare with your current digibox. If it has not switched off after about 15/20 minutes then unplug the box and start again.
