Maybe RD100 could let you have the ISE chip (if it's still working) ;)

I know this is an old post but do you happen to still have the broken decoder around? I am interested in the ISE chip.

Thank you.

Thanks. I thought I saw him in a post that was only a couple of weeks ago. I am learning a lot about these AFN decoders. I aquired a few of them the past year but most are not able to be activated and are only used as spare parts. If I can get some old ISE chips from broken units, then I am in good shape.

Thanks again,
TJ

hi,
i have repaired a few afn decoders and most have power supply problems.
downloaded a ckt diagram form the internet and fixed about 10 of there here in naples.
only one took a lighting strike and was not fixable.
if the box is making a high pitch sound and voltages are low
problem is c9 47 uf cap.
here is the voltages
on the power supply colored wires
white plus 14/19v
orange plus 30v
black ground
red plus 5 v
blue plus 12
yellow minus 12v
if these are all low than c9 could be the problem

the big cap c2 holds a 315vdc on it and will knock you down.
this is for the d9234 power diagram.
if you need the diagram i can get it again and send it
have a good day
ralph:)

Thanks Ralph,

The pwr supply problem is with it clicking and never provding correct voltages. It would click for a while, then evetually start working. As it was going bad, the clicking would last longer, evetually not ever powering up.

I picked up a couple of other units that were being thrown away and repaired them, but the were de-mil'ed so to say and are not able to be registered. If I can get chips from previously authroized, now broken units, then I am in business. I am a authroized user and have a line of friends who refuse to rent from AAFES. So, if you can help us out, point us in the right direction; please do. I wish we could buy the chips directly from SA; but I bet that isn't an option.

Most/all of these friends will also gladly buy from AAFES in Europe but just about all of my contacts have returned to the states.

One question I had for you is to confirm that both TID and UA are stored ont he chip; so if I move the chip from one unit to another, both the TID and UA move to the new unit; is this correct? My fix action for one system (D9234) was simply by moving the chip to another unit. I just bought a system off ebay and will see if moving the chip into that unit will work. I noticed that when I moved the chip into a D9835 unit, I got an error referring to the chip needing to be installed in a system with and ISE chip; telling me that the plug in IC is not the only part of the decryption equation. Thus, the plug in chip works with an external chip and that chips from 9234 units and 9835 units are not compatable. Another observation is that the 9234 units are not all that energy efficient and get significantly hotter than the 9835 series.

Then there is the 9834 unit with the eithernet port and RS-232. I need to still fix that one.

Take care,

TJ

Earlier today, I wrote a long reply to you only to see it wasn’t saved; not sure why but I will try to remember and retype it here.
For the record, I am a authorized user of AFN but like most of my friend, refuse to rent decoders from AAFES when they sell them in Europe! Even though they cut their rental prices in half, it is much better to buy. Another example of how AAFES takes advantage in the monopoly society—let’s not even get into their fuel pricing methods!
I’ve been overseas from the beginning of the AFRTS Satellite service. Over the years, I came across a few broken decoders and as you have noticed, the majority of the time, it is with the power supply. Until recently, I’ve lived on base and didn’t have a need for AFN satellite, it was on the base CATV system. Now, I live off base and find myself dusting off the decoders that have been sitting around for a while. I not only want to help my family, but others in my situation. I am strict with abiding by the rules; don’t want to jeopardize AFN programming or their network. My gripe is with AAFES only renting in Asia vs. selling like in Europe.
I recently repaired a D9234 and have the following observations: These boxes get a lot hotter than the current D9835 series. I was able to move the ISE chip from the broken 9234 to a good one and it is obvious the UA number moved with it but is the TID # also on the chip? In other words, does both the TID and UA go with the chip so when I renew my authorization, I know what to tell them. I also noticed that when I put the chip into a newer unit, I got an error; I forget the exact error but it told me that the chip must be used with a decoder with an ISE chip; kind of telling me the ISE is really a chip on the motherboard and the 9835 series doesn’t use that chip?
I’ve got a lot more observations and questions for you but this reply is already very long. Another thing for the record is that I am not interested in hacking or decrypting the decoders—totally not interested; my goal is to fix broken decoders and getting used units to authorized users and avoid being raped by AAFES. Did I mention they demand that renters must have their STAR credit card? I’m not sure if that policy is still in effect but they really take advantage of their customers all the way to the bank.
Thanks;
TJ

Hi,
We have a Power Vu D9234 that stopped working recently. When we plug it in, it sounds like a fan is spinning in it, but it won't turn on. Do you think it's fixable? Does it sound like a power supply problem? Thank you in advance for any help/advice.

hello.
if you mesure the voltages and they are all low all you need to do is change the caps i mentiones above.
if the mother board has a problem thats different.
i had a tuner took a lightning strike and could not find a replacement.
if the chips are zaped on mother board its gone.
if its making a cliking noise and the volteges are all low.
try the caps i mentioned and watch the big one it holds a charge and will zap you.ralph:)

Thanks for the fast response. Sorry, I don't know much about electronics-- How do I measure the voltages?

Here's the power supply for the D9234. If you don't know how to use a multimeter to check voltage conditions, don't touch it. As the owner of one of these infernal machines, I can vouch for what ralphmagno says - there are some lethal voltages flying around in there.

hi to all

changing a chip because the power supply is bad is not a good idea
if you never soldered or worked with this don't try.
print the diagram and take it to a tv repair guy.
show him the cap c9 that could be bad.
all the voltages will be low.
the 12 v will run about 10.5
30 v will run about 22 v
5 v will run 3.8v
if all voltages are good except 30 supply the problem is in the 30 supply area.

anyone that repairs tv will be able to follow the diagram.
depending on labor costs it may run 50 cents for parts or even a few dollars if more parts are broke.
labor is another prob.
the diagram above is good. i have fixed 25 of these.
hope this helps

ralphmagno thanks fo rth einfo concerning the C9 on the D9234 AFN decoder. I managed to fix one with the high pitch sound. However, I have several decoders having a clicking sound and need some advice what Caps I should be looking at. I have the circuit diagram and suspect the big cap 400vw 150V, but I cannot find replacements here in Germany. I have about 10 decoders that I would like to fix. Most of them have this clicking sound. thanks in advance.. Joe

Hello Joe!
i have the decoder here in the meantime, but still no remote for it,and no autorisation..
are all remotes compatible, between the diffrent afn decoder series old and newer ones?
or does every typ have also a diffrent remote sensor?

is natobase in heidelberg still open or closed in the meantime?
thanks for your input!
