March 22, 2012: A recent flurry of eruptions on the sun did more than spark pretty auroras around the poles. NASA-funded researchers say the solar storms of March 8[SUP]th[/SUP] through 10[SUP]th[/SUP] dumped enough energy in Earth’s upper atmosphere to power every residence in New York City for two years.
“This was the biggest dose of heat we’ve received from a solar storm since 2005,” says Martin Mlynczak of NASA Langley Research Center. “It was a big event, and shows how solar activity can directly affect our planet.”

Anything 6 or above on the scale is a potential risk to satellites

There were high levels of auroral activity after midnight last night - aurora were reported as far south as Leeds & Northern Ireland.

Currently eight spots are visible on the side facing the Earth, and the solar winds have picked up quite a bit since the weekend.

Very pleased to report my first Sporadic E opening for 2012 this afternoon, kinda surprising with solar activity over the last few days too. TV pictures from Lviv and Kiev in Ukraine, both of which I failed to record as I was trying to recable the shack at 100mph.
