SOLUTION: BBC HD on SKYSTAR2

just sharing info here, seeing as there are loads of questions about this scattered about and are a pain to find answers.

To get BBC HD on SKYSTAR2 (and most other cards), i was messing about for ages and ended up buying a couple of peices of cheap software (£10 each) then everything just started working, with no messing.

1. CoreAVC 1.1 Pro from http://coreavc.corecodec.org/ (yes you need the PRO version for BBC's MBAFF malarky)

2. DVB Viewer GE, you must purchase DVB Viewer from http://www.dvbviewer.com and then download the GE version from the members area.

Install the pair of these, without any other h264 codecs installed (inc fddshow) to make sure you get no freezing and roberts ya fathers brother.

beware, you need some serious processing power for the MBAFF stuff, im on the edge with an A64 4000 * 2.5ghz, could do with a little more power really.

if there was a stable free way i'd do that, but this way is SO much simpler. i tried with the trial versions of powerdvd7 but the framerate was about 5fps down on coreavc.

NOTE 1: DVB Viewer GE is not required now, seems to work fine with DVB viewer 3.5.

NOTE 2: in CoreAVC config, turn all deblocking OFF for much improved performance and to fix any lipsync issues.

Requirements (from DVB Viewer site)

For DVB-S you need an antenna link suitable for digital satellite reception. It must be equipped with a digital (universal) LNB as reception unit, otherwise you will only get some channels in the low band, which transmit on formerly analogue transponders. In case of doubt consult a specialised dealer for satellite equipment.
Additionally you need the SkyStar2 card/USB-box from TechniSat (or one compatible with the B2C2-chipset) or a TwinHan PCI card (not US, which must be installed in or connected to your PC via USB and also be connected to the LNB via a suitable coax cable (i. e.TechniSat Coaxsat 2150 digital).
Terrestrial reception (DVB-T) needs the AirStar2 from TechniSat or a TwinHan card. Of course DVB-T must be available in your region. For optimal DVB experience your PC should be powerful enough to handle the incoming data:
A Pentium® III-processor (or higher) starting from 700 MHz. But particularly for editing video files on your PC (conversion, cutting, etc.) the processor can't be fast enough... For HDTV you need a graphic card with IDCT (MPEG hardware acceleration) and a CPU with at least 1 GHz.

A sufficiently large hard disk. For pure television playback the DVBViewer does not need more than 3 mbytes. For recordings however a large capacity is necessary. A TV broadcast of normal length (without advertisement) can occupy up to 3 gbytes (about 3000 mbytes).

A graphics card with at least 8 mbytes memory as well as a fairly modern sound card, which is able to process the sampling rate of 48 kHz used with digital satellite reception. In addition to avoid problems, up to date multimedia drivers - which should be available on the manufactures website - are also recommendable. It is advised to use a card with integrated MPEG2 decoder (i. e. Geforce4 MX, Geforce FX, ATI Radeon).

128 mbytes memory (RAM) or more. The minimum memory capacity depends in individual cases on how much your opera­ting system and other installed software use.

Windows 98 (SE), ME, 2000/2003 or XP as operating system (Windows 95 is not officially supported though it may work).. The system should also be updated with service packs and updates by Microsoft in order to prevent problems.
Important Multimedia extensions have (except with Windows XP) only subsequently been added, e.g. DirectX®; the DVBViewer needs at least DirectX version 6.1. Important: An installation of the Windows Mediaplayer® 9/10 (WMP 9/10) and DirectX 9 may lead to problems. Please consider the notes from TechniSat concerning this topic! hi there,

I've also got DVB viewer and I am using the Powerdvd trial codec. I have the following spec pc.

3.4G D Core P4
3GB 533MHz RAM
512MB Gainwood Geforce 7900GT
2 x 250GB SATA II HDD

I can get the BBC HD feed with the SkyStar II card. However it still drops a couple of frames now and again and watching the footie is very hard.

I have installed the Purevideo package, CoreAvc, Powerdvd 7 Trail and the K-Lite Codec pack. I've been messing about for ages to try and get it to run perfectly smooth and I've not had much luck. After I installed the Purevideo pack things got better on the CPU usage and it came down. However I was still dropping the odd few frames. I've installed the latest NVidia drivers and also DirectX. Still no joy...

On CoreAVC how do you access the options?? All I got was two folders one was CoreAVCx32 and x64. Also within DVBViewer it will see both the Core Codec and the Powerdvd Codec. However BBC HD will only work with the PowerDVD codec selected. All I get is audio with the CoreAVC codec. Could this be coz its only the Standard version?

Also what settings did you use in DVB Viewer with regards to Video Rendering VRM7, VRM9, Video Overlay etc..

Any advice would be great.

the standard coreavc will NOT work, you must have the pro version. with that you get a config program to play with a couple of settings. one is deblocking, you must turn this off as it need SERIOUS power!

after watching a full match yesterday, i found football rather irritatiing. although fraps reports full 25fps, it does seem quite right. its like watch the game in fast forward.

i cant work out how to fix it, its been suggested on another forum that if you get this issue on nvidia cards then rollback the driver, but im using an ATI so this option doesnt seem to improve anything.

VRM7, VRM9 are terribly i leave the rendering as the default.

I've had the same problem with the fast forwarding on the footie. I've installed the pro version of the Coreavc and it made no difference.

If anyone is really getting perfect playback on the SkyHD channel??

I get BBC-HD perfectly without any side effects. I use Technotrend S2 3200 and the included BDA-Application "TT-Mediacenter". I had already tried with a Skystar 2/ DVBViewer, but Technotrend is better ! Recording/playback BBC-HD is no problem !
But H.264 steals the pc !

Hi Guys

I'm from Nottingham Beeston area. I was wondering if I can get BBC HD directly onto my Dell Laptop (without buying SkyHDbox as I can't afford it). If it's not possible with laptop please suggest hardwares and methods for a desktop.

Please suggest what hardwares and setting/methods do I need. Kindly suggest your recommendation with as much details as possible as I know very little about satelite tv (i only own a USB DVB-T stick)

Thank you for your kind recommendation..Just read through the technical specs of it. I couldn't find any specific mention that it is capable of decoding h264 encoded stream (, which BBC HD uses). It only says 'License for MPEG2 and MPEG4 (AVC/H.264) - Software decoder' under Accessories. Does it mean imply that the hardware is capable of decoding h264 encoded transport stream?

Also do I need to but any dish and other things? Currently our house normal antena is bad that I don't even get Channel4 with it. I may move to Manchester next year. Please advise me considering that.

Is there any such device available in which I can use those slot in those cards (like sky, virginmedia, etc) to access channels like NGHD or DiscoveryHD? I'm asking about this because I want to buy something that I can use for subscribing HiDef documentary (pay) channels, when I can afford. If you have any recommendation for desktop please let me know

Ive got Skystar2 and when i play some HD programme (ORF 1 HD) i dont get good fps.
What should I do?

I have: Athlon64 X2 3800+(2,0ghz), ATi radeon HD 2600 XT 256mb gddr4,2gb 800mhz ram... Is it good anoght or what?
P.s i use DVB-viewer (ITS FREE)
