Unfortunately I don't think as it "hums" loudly when I apply the power and so I think it's an induction motor where some windings have finally shorted (and, FWIW, the bearings aren't seized because I can manually turn the shaft).
Might be capacitor driven... check that.

Good idea in itself, but the motor has been threatening to do this (i.e. not work!) for sometime and I have often had to start it working by manually turning the shaft until it generated enough torque to take over. Pretty convinced it is shorted windings from the sound coming from it!

Anyway, that unit was a cheapie well over 10 (possibly 15) years ago and so it has earned it's keep - and now RIP.

Something else for the garage/workshop - a very cheap battery tester that comes in various "flavours" BT-168 GBT-502A AA AAA DC9V 1.5V Button Cell Battery Tester Checker Indicator | eBay.

I've had a simple moving coil version for years and it has proved it's worth time and again - decided I needed another one (1st one was never where and when I needed it) and so went looking - this time I bought the digital version that also test coin cells.

If it struggled in cold and it's capacitor based then it's very likely to be that. No you can't throw it out!

OK, I'll see if I can fix it when I dismount it - but it often had a "low torque" problem when I used it (stalled too often), and so I want something with more torque - and the Draper one, with the 370W motor should provide that.

Yeah not much you can do about torque. A new cap will make it start better and go again if it stalls.

It could be that there is dirt build up between the air gaps in the armature, which can be cleaned off with alcohol, and a stiff brush

I'll have a look at that as well when I get around to dismounting the motor - however, given that most of these motors are Totally Enclosed (TE) or TE Fan Cooled (TEFC) it can be very difficult to get inside the cases to do anything (another reason why I bought a new unit).

The grinder is an old Nutool unit, but they went out of business around 2008 - not sure what markings, if any, there are on the motor itself (and I won't really have much of a chance to look more closely until this time next week because a lot of other things are much higher priority).

The battery tester arrived today (very quick from China!)) - reads to 3 decimal places, works quite nicely, and allowed me to check some coin cells quite easily, and discard a couple that are completely dead. Well worth the small outlay!

I'm waiting on a wee Satlink DVB-S2 signal meter I ordered in the AliExpress sale, tracked, it arrived in the UK two days ago, £10 cheaper than eBay for the same one.

Lidl

If you have any brick/concrete cutting to do, they now have some diamond-tipped angle-grinder blades in both 125mm/5" (bought some) and 225mm/9" diameters

Sometime late next week, they will have some 1m wide 1.8m high steel racking units - cheaper per unit if bought in 2's. Unfortunately not for me as I need 0.9m/36" wide units, or it just won't work.

Think I'll buy two, bolt them together and tell the missus it's the new TV unit as she keeps banging on about this bloody IKEA Kadex/Kadax unit (How ever it's spelled lol), love to see her face lol

Ref the 370W Draper 05096 grinder/sander which arrived a couple of days ago, I got it out of the box (it's HEAVY!) and mounted it in place of the old one (which turned out not to be a NuTool unit, and was rated at only 210W, so not even 240w!) - seems to work quite nicely, and the adjustable light looks like being very handy, given where I have had to locate the unit. Won't bother to try to fix the old unit, but I'll keep the grinding wheel because it should fit, and the speed rating should be OK because that old unit was 2950rpm under No Load conditions, whereas the Draper is 2850rpm No Load.
