In America Sony have been found installing rootkits on computers without consent. Rootkits are software implants used to hide malware, once it’s installed, and avoid detection by antivirus programs, they allow malicious code to be written deep in the Windows Operating System where most antivirus software cannot detect them.
Sony did this, when the owner played a legitimately bought music CD on his computer, to limit copies of the disk being made and determine how it can be played. This does not affect Apple or Linux systems, but no doubt they’re working on it.
Once discovered Sony offered solutions, on their website, of a downloadable patch, which will reveal the hidden files, or filling in a form to download a program to uninstall the software.
For once Microsoft are not happy with this situation, “we are concerned about malware and its impact on our customers machines. Rootkits have a clearly negative impact on not only the security, but the reliability and performance of their systems. In order to help protect our customers we will add a detection and removal signature for this Rootkit component software to our Window anti-spyware beta.

Yes, read about this the other day, it is unbelievable that a major company would sink to installing these types of programs.

Not the first time Sony have misjudged something ... Betamax springs to mind. One almighty balls up with that format, despite the fact of it's superiority over JVCs VHS format :-thumbup

I believe that Sony have now agreed to discontinue this insidious practice.

About time that Sony realised that there a world outside of their slightly strange reality.
