Hi there everyone... Bit of a head scratcher here and thought this might be a place to post it.. Ive been a member on here some time. Although i dont post all that often im a regular reader to the forums.. I was working today with a very educated person who is also a tad of a synic.. I somehow got to talking about gps and satellites came up.. I was suprised when i was met with his belief that satellites don not exist at all and all communication is still done through radio waves bounced off the ionosphere... I took this in jest and since i have been in from work have looked up many sites on the internet claiming exactly the same with some seemingly valid arguments to prove themselves.. cluesforum.info has some weird and wonderful ideas on many things but there is a long thread about this very topic... What do you guys think???

I think they should get a good book on how the ionosphere works then revise their crackpot theory. It's a good job all radio waves don't bounce off the ionosphere, we'd have a lot of problems talking to space or seeing stars. File this one next to the loonies from powerwatch. :-nuts :toke:

*Some* radio waves do bounce off the ionosphere - -this is why AM radio waves go further at night - so its easier to pick up places like Germany on the radio sets after dark when some of the lower layers dissipate. The shorter wavelengths used by satellites light etc go straight through though.

There are conspiracy theories for just about everything these days! Hadn't heard of the fake satellite one though.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

I like conspiracy theories, cos reading about them and laughing at their rather shaky grip on reality makes me seem perfectly normal... :-rofl2
