Anyone ??
It may well be my integrated Radion ATI HD3200 chipset drivers need updating ...
but damned if I can find anywhere to get updates that doesn't want to charge me for them..
Gone are the days when you could just download a driver and install it without some third party wanting a cut...

AMD holds all the drivers for free on their website:

Just shows how out of touch I am ..
I take it AMD now run the show when it comes to Radeon ..
Thanks for the link ..
No harm in trying I spose ..though windows _claim_ my drivers are the latest..
cheers.

Yeah, AMD and ATI merged quite a few years back, initially trying to rename everything ATI to AMD, but the ATI name still lives on (at the behest of those of us who don't hold much faith in their products!!), but you have to go to AMD to get ATI drivers... :)

Wow ..that is certainly resource hungry ..
Guess I wont be using the space engine afterall..
The latest catalyst drivers got me as far as the menus ..but my pc shuts down during the 'panetarium' build sequence ..
Video drivers stop responding and the program hangs before it starts ..
Clocked CPU usage at various points at well over 90% ..
and peaks at 98% ..
So I guess my PC is just too ancient...
The fact that it uses integrated graphics may well be the issue ...
demanding too much from the cpu ...and memory ..
Even though I have 4gb ...some is diverted for graphics use.
Oh well..

You have 4GB with only 3.25GB available because 32bit versions of Windows can't "see" a full 4GB (or higher) due to software limitations, you need the 64bit edition for that, you can run it on that spec system, assuming your install disc (if you have one) has a 64bit option, the license keys are the same for either version... :)

My mobo is an Asus M3A78 Pro ..and will I think take a better cpu ..
If I can get one at the right price ..
I may well risk an upgrade ..
I assume I still use my 32 bit O/S

Cheapest I've see on ebay for the (45nm Phenom™ II CPU) is around £45
..so if anyone has a used one they wanna sell ??
Now's yer chance.

Here are the specs..

  • AMD AM2+/AM2 Platform
  • Support latest AMD Phenom ™ Quad-Core Processor
  • Dual-Channel DDR2 -1066/800/667
  • Instant Internet Access with ASUS Express Gate
  • AMD Hybrid CrossFireX™ and DX10 Support
  • User Friendly Q-Shield Desig
  • 4+1 Phase Power Design
  • Support 45nm Phenom™ II CPU

Yes, if you upgrade the CPU you can keep the same installation, but I would highly recommend the 64bit version of Windows as it'll utilise what you have got a lot better than the 32bit version will, especially if you install more RAM as you would only ever see 3.25GB under a 32bit OS... :)

I have many apps and hardware which only run on 32 bit OS ..
but I guess I could dual boot ..
Oh wait ..that would be triple boot as I still have an old XP on there as well..

You don't need to dual-boot, a 64bit OS will natively run 32bit programs, I'm using the Pale Moon web browser right now, which is 32bit, under Windows7 Ultimate 64bit, as there's still a lot of 32bit programs out there that work universally from 32bit XP to 64bit 8.1... :)

The cpu being an issue is now removed from the equation..having borrowed from a friend a 9500 quad core this morning ..
I couldn't run it for too long as my cooler isn't big enough and the temp soon rises ..
but long enough to test Space engine which hangs exactly the same..
So ..glad impatient me didn't just buy a new cpu ..
Turning attention to the integrated graphics now ..
There is a pcie x16 slot on the mobo ..so maybe a card can be at least tried ..though I'll be unhappy if the embedded chipset ..which has dvi and hdmi outs ..isn't sufficient

Yes, it runs on my Dimension C521, but only just since I'm also using the internal graphics adapter (OpenGL 2.1). I've had to restrict the processor to 70% operation so other stuff can run in the background, and set up the start-up/planetarium to ignore errors. There's a help guide on the spaceengine forum.

But you still can try and run SpaceEngine by disabling checking of critical errors at startup. Open main.cfg and change value of this parameter to 'true':

IgnoreCriticalCheck true // ignore checking of OpenGL version and critical extensions supporting

Operating the ship itself is somewhat more difficult than the Independence Wars version, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Will post some screenshots later tonight, if I get home

Finally got this running on my pc ..
Had to reduce resolution to get it to run reasonably smoothly ..
I had my suspicions it was the mobos built in graffix chipset ..
Last night a friend paid me a visit and I mentioned this to him ..and as luck would have it ..he is upgrading his daughters pc with a higher spec nvidia card ..so the old one was up for grabs ..
we agreed £15 but I needed to test it first ..
this morning popped in the card pcie2 X16 ...and switched off the on board graphics in the bios ..
et voila ..
Space engine completed the load/build ..and I visited my first planet.
..but a bit of a lumpy ride until I dropped the screen resolution.
;)

I too 'invested' in a graphics card for the Dell C521 earlier this week.

Browsing in a charity shop near here I saw a cardboard box under the counter which had the 'HP' logo on the outside. Inside was a small carrier bag, mouse and some additional leads, all neatly packed up. I asked what it was and how much, to be told it was a recent donation of a PC and 20 pounds would secure it.

Et voila, clean and virtually unused S7640 becomes mine.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...7166/loc:4&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3299468

Specifications include the slim GeForce 7500LE graphics card (that might fit in the Dell), but I will probably just run the SpaceEngine programme on this 'new' machine once I've cleared some stuff off the table.

Bargain.
