A while ago there was info that Spanish TV (the domestic terrestrial channels such as tve1, tve2 etc..) would be avilable via satellite in 2007

I can see them listed now (lyngsat) on Hispasat 30w with encryption
called PowerVu

Can anybody advise what sort of dedicated receiver (or what CAM) should I be looking to get to be able to receive this ?

Thanks

You dont. Its an ultra secure professional system for broadcasters and cable head ends which uses dedicated individually addressable receivers from scientific atlanta.

Find another way of getting your channels as theres is no way you will be watching the PowerVu stuff.

A smartcard is not required in PowerVU encryption. The owner of the receiver sends the serial number (and another 1-2 numbers of the receiver) to the operator. The operator authorizes the receiver, not a smartcard.

.. thanks analogueasat and tesla

... so it is then a dedicated receiver with built-in decryption 'thingy'

..something like a skybox then ?
presumably not very versatile (with no empty slots for more CAMs) , not usable for anything else but to receive the few channels it is meant to receive (plus maybe any FTA)

fine by me if it is so...
but how do you go about getting such receiver,
- is it available over the counter in Spain?
- do I need to get a Spanish (TV licence paying) resident to get it for me ?
costs? any limitations/ activation hitches

It would be great if somebody who has got this could advise how it works

You will often find that the channels encrypted in Powervu are not destined for the general populace directly from satellite, but supplied for re-transmission by cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasters using more conventional receivers.

In other words, you may not be able to acquire one of the receivers for these particular channels.

You dont get a receiver.
1) most definitely not
2) not available to anyone apart from authorised broadcasters.
3) the receiver has to be authorised by Scientific Atlanta and theres is no way they will activate one for anyone apart from an authorised user.

Most of the Spanish terrestrial channels are part of the Digital+ package on 30W and 19E so investigate that avenue instead.

I have now dug up the article (in Spanish) where Spanish Television were announcing the plan to make their channels available to people VIA SATELLITE as of January 2007

It also says that one would only need to buy a DECODER (descodificador) costing around 100 EUR to get access to the contents.

I was hoping this would all be analogous to skybox and a card for freeview of Channel4 and Five (though may it be in this case a cardless box)

If it is a rebroadcast system, that would be fine – means I just need to get the box to which they will ‘rebroadcast to’
As long as the rebroadcasting is done via satellite and on a wide enough beam (rolfw, you mention satellite as one of the re-transmission options)

Probably only somebody who has got this and happens to be reading this forum can confirm if the system is now up and running as planned and if indeed it is a rebroadcast

(I would still rather investigate into this first before looking into Digital+ package, you see analoguesat, when you get a package that usually means A LOT OF CHANNELS and one only has so much time to watch :)

digital terrestrial will not help me, that's why I was hoping for direct to home satellite.

I paste the complete article below.
As I understood it it WAS going to be available via satellite.
Basically this was to ensure that by 2010 (when the analogue switchoff is planned) nobody was left without acces to the national TVE, as by that year the coverage of Digital Terestrial would still not be 100%.
Satellite was going to be the (at least short term) solution.

Can you receive Tele 5 free via satellite?

Do you just need to buy a D+ box and plug it in or do you require a viewing card from Digital+?

You can get the international service of RTV Espania on Sky - and on numerous other sats

The RTE1 you mention though is Radio Telefis Eiranne (Ireland) not Radio Television Espania - none of the Spanish domestic services are on Sky UK
