Spellchecker is cheating:) but I can understand the search problem.

I don´t use spellchecker as it gets mad when I change language.

Good idea to change the title Rolf, seen some strange ideas :-rofl2

There is a new version of Firefox out now - 2.0.0.13. You can download over the top of your present version by the way. The first thing it will ask you after install is what dictionary you want. The default is English USA. You can select whatever you want from there.

At the risk of being labelled a pedant, spelled and spelt are correct according to the Oxford dictionary. Spelt seems to be used chiefly in British English.

Mispellings are even made on eBay. Posts don't turn up in searches and get fewer or no bids at all. Unless you know the site that searches for spelling mistakes on eBay ;) .... hey, I know, why don't the hosts of this great sat site use the same technology ... ?

"Spelled" is American, "spelt" is English (or British, although that's not a language).

I seem to remember (from reading a book) the origin of verbs ending in "t" is German. I had a look on google but found nothing.

Possibly this book?

_http://www.iliadreader.co.uk/book.25768.htm

I've read it a couple of times, the most recently about 10 years ago. A fascinating (well, to me anyway) and even handed (for a couple of Americans) history of the English language and its many forms nowadays, including British, American, Irish, Australian, Indian, Pidgin and probably more than I can remember.

I'll have to make a trip to the library and get it out again now!
