Hi Guys,
can soneone specify the actual difference betwen subsided and unsubsided sky box.
I know if i want to take the receiver abroad, I would require un unsubsided sky digibox.
But I am a bit confused because I explored some uk based sites that sell online skydigiboxes and they say for europe i need the unsubsided one.
but when I click on the link about the subsided skiboxes where it say 'uk only', it also say 'no subscription, NOR telephone connection required'.
so where is the truth??? How anyone can differeciate the 2??
thanks

By subsidised they mean that you get it cheap (or free) because you are going to subscribe for 12 months, but you are required to have the phone line connected during that period. They may have relaxed that now because I see signs saying no phone connection required. If you are going to subscribe, you'll need a UK address. If you don't want to subscribe, but just want the free channels, you may have to pay 100 or so for a new box, but do some searching on this site and have a look at the satcure web site which has a wealth of info

Basically, if you take up a SKY deal - whether that be free installation or a cheap/free box - SKY will require you to keep it connected to a working phone line for 12 months. That's always been the case.

If you want to move abroad with a SKY box - the best thing to do is go to an independent sat shop and buy one [read: come to a deal] or take up an offer from SKY and delay your move a year - or, buy a box off Ebay. Same goes for the card you'll need.

If you move abroad and want a sub to SKY channels - just make sure you register the card to a UK address/friend. You can still phone from abroad to deal with your sub details/channel changes.

Hope this helps.

No its not we use to sell sky digital when it first came out and you could pay the extra fee if you did not want to take the interactive contract that subsidised the sky box,

Also still you can do it there is always a sky stand in my town center with a sign up saying no telephone line needed,

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the "subsidised" boxes remained the property of Sky.

No doubt someone more knowledgeable than myself will be able to give you the correct information.

I'll believe you. For a standard install:-

The half price, install and Sky(+)box offers and the subscription prices only apply when you agree to subscribe to Sky digital for at least 12 months. Sky+ : Sky+ box £99 for brand new Sky digital customers. Offer excludes previous or existing Sky digital households. Only compatible with digital satellite. Sky digital subscription required for Sky digital programming. Sky+ can store an average of 40 hours of programmes at a time. Sky+ subscription required to use the Personal Video Recorder features of Sky+. Sky+ subscription is free while you subscribe to two or more of Sky Premium channels i.e. Sky Sports 1 and 2, Sky Movies 1 and 2 (otherwise £10 a month). Installation: Standard installation of your free Sky box is free. Standard installation of your extra Sky box is free when you take a Multiroom subscription. Standard installation of the Sky+ box is £60. Standard installation of standard/Sky+ box costs £120 if you don't subscribe to Sky digital. Extra costs apply for non standard installation. General: Your Sky HD/Sky+ box/free Sky box must be connected to a fixed telephone line for 12 months. You must get any consents required (e.g. landlord??????s). Installation may be subject to delay. Offers exclude Sky TV Month by Month customers. Minimum Sky digital/Sky+/Sky HD subscriptions 12 months. Further terms and conditions apply. Information only applies to residential customers in the UK, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man. Correct at time of print (June 2006). Calls cost up to 8 pence per minute for BT customers. Calls from other providers may vary.
For a FreeSat install (for GBP150.00)

Do I have to connect my Box to a phone line?
No. However, as part of a standard installation we will try to connect your Box to a working telephone line to enable you to make full use of the interactive services available on the digital satellite platform. We will do this unless you ask us not to, or an appropriate socket is not available, or the Box cannot be connected for another reason. In connecting the Box to the socket we will use the nearest available socket and any cabling will be clipped to the relevant skirting.
Uuumm, major dilema :-O

A subsidised box is yours after the 12 month subscription is up.

This may have changed, but Sky never used to chase up the telephone connection on subsidised standard boxes. I know many people who have got a subsided box installed in the UK and taken them to spain (where originally the boxes sold for £300+) and have been using it there ever since, with not a word from Sky about it. Sky do write letters about mirror subscriptions not being connected, which is where some of the confusion comes in. However like I say that may have changed, so it might still be easier to get one on eBay.
