A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Not sure if it is possible to change the NVR HDMI o/p resolution - will take a look at the manual as I don't remember seeing anything in the configuration menus (then again, I wasn't looking at this aspect of the configuration)

This should now be your next step, see if the green light is enabled after dropping the resolution down from 1080.

If still nothing then I would guess there is an issue with understanding a 60Hz signal on the converters

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
I don't know what inputs are on the back of the television, but a composite video signal will happily run down RG6 coax cable for hundreds of feet.
Composite video via the coax to the phono video i/p on the AVR would likely work, but I rather doubt that the resulting picture on the TV would be very good - I don't think that "low quality" SD showing the feeds from 4 cameras, and later likely 5 or 6 cameras simultaneously, would upscale well enough on a 42" screen to produce anything really clear.

Luckily I can return the HDMI-SDI and SDI-HDMI converters to Amazon with little financial loss, and I can get one of these Foxconn nettops for £65 - so the actual net difference is very small

Why do you think it will be low quality ?

The resolution should be whatever is put into the device up to a maximum of 1600x1200 depending on the monitor settings,

Update: now ordered a VGA splitter and a VGA-to-BNC converter for the attic end, and an F-connector to phono adapter for the lounge end - will see, next week, if that works as intended.

Also now returning all the SDI kit to Amazon.
