The January tournament was won by Ozeki Takakeisho, and will be promoted to Yokozuna if he wins in Osaka. Questions remain over whether Terunofuji will compete although he has begun training again after surgery.

After the January tournament Hakuho's danpatsu-shiki ceremony took place, where relatives, fan club members, fellow wrestlers and finally his stable master took turns to cut and remove the his top knot. Former Yokozuna Harumafuji brought the big man to tears:

Former yokozuna Hakuho is in trouble & his stable fighter Hokuseiho has been forced to retire after violence allegations where Hokuseiho assualted two younger rikshi at the stable over a considerable time

Japan's sumo association demoted Hakuho in his role as a trainer and forced him to take a pay cut.

Hokuseiho won't be missed, a one-trick pony whose primary form of attack (on the dohyo at least) was leaning on opponents. Another stable master will takeover the running of Hakuho's stable for a period of time to enable Hakuho to 'learn' how run the place properly.

One theory I read, and it's only a rumour/gossip, is the Sumo Association can't afford the payment due to Hakuho when he retires so they weren't in a position to chuck him out :-ohmy
