Firstly, please move this thread if it is in the wrong place, I wasn't too sure where my Q fits.

I have the above STB which receives Digiturk channels in Turkey. I am trying to figure out why the quality of the HD isn't as great as I am used to in the UK and I am wondering if a box upgrade would help.

According to the spec of the box, it can handle the following stream type:

MPEG-2 ISO/IEC 13818 Aktarım Özellikleri

For comparison, the same box but two revisions on, the HD 9505 HD can handle:

MPEG2 (HP@HL), H.264 (HP@L4.1)

And what I believe to be the latest Sagemcom boxes can handle:

MPEG-4 AVC HP@L4.2 (HD) 50 Hz için

Now, looking at the channel S Spor HD, which is one of the channels I think isn't the best quality,I find this entry on lyngsat:

7.0°E
Eutelsat 7AEurope B
46-48
DVB-S2
QPSK
MPEG-4
HD
30000
5/6
IrdetoDigiturkTur
Qaa

This suggests that this channel is broadcast using the DVB-S2 system using MPEG-4 encoding. I've also confirmed this on the Eutelsat website.

What I don't understand is firstly, how does my existing box receive it when it only states it can handle MPEG-2? Is it possible that there are multiple transport streams for this channel, one using MPEG-4 and another MPEG-2? Is that something that happens?

Or, is my box only DVB-S (it doesn't state - but would support for only MPEG-2 imply it is DVB-S only and not DVB-S2?) and this transponder is broadcasting using backwards compatibility (I read about hierarchical modulation)?

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way of displaying the technical information about the stream when using the box.

All the Digiturk channels, on 7E, broadcast using DVB-S2 QPSK 30000 5/6:

Can you please provide more details regarding your satellite dish, and check if you have any other problems with Horizontal polarity channels.

Some MPEG2 receivers can decrypt MPEG4 to a SD version

Check with the receiver manufacturer (Humax ?)

How old is the receiver design ?

The earliest mention of it I've found so far is 2012. I know its a design we've used for a good few years in Turkey, but the 9502-9505 all look pretty much identical so it's difficult to pinpoint exactly when the 9503 was released.

Edit :) , it's an HD receiver , and all channels on the Transponder are HD so you will only see what res. the provider transmits ..

Try and edit your settings ..1080p and so on ..

Yes it has HDMI. Pics attached (from google, as I'm not at the location of the box at the moment).

The manual (link further up) has full details of the spec of the box including diagrammatic images of the front and rear which might be more useful than these fuzzy photos :-ohmy)

EDIT: also, just to add, the PQ isn't terrible. It's just not as good as I've seen elsewhere, such as Sky HD/Sky Q. If there is nothing I can do about it then so be it, but I want to make sure I am getting the best available, so really I'm trying to establish if asking Digiturk for their latest box could mean I get a better picture quality.

There are 8 channels on the Frequency of which 6 in HD .. it must be the compressed rate of the provider .. a new box won't make them better :)

Yeah I guess so, unless they are doing this “hierarchical modulation”compatibility thing where they broadcast DVB-S aswell as DVB-S2 and my box is just getting the lower quality DVB-S signal but I’ve no idea if that is the case.

you also have to remember that not all programs will be shot in HD .. most of the current ones will but older stuff will be SD quality upscaled ..and the provider can change resolution as they please ..

Your Turkey TV set might not be the same spec as the one in the UK also .

Yeah...this is Premier League football though, so the source will definitely be high Q.

I just have the nagging feeling I'm missing something when it is shown as being broadcast in MPEG-4, yet my box clearly states it can only handle MPEG-2.

(EDIT: and it's the same PQ with the Bein Sports Turkish channels too, 1-4 and 1-2 Max).

Thanks for your help by the way.

There were not many DVB-S2 receivers around in 2012. It's unlikely a supplier would put top specification into a subscriber box if the broadcaster did not have the need for it at the time.

One way to solve the mistery is to find someone near you that has Digiturk and go round with a few beers to check the screen res. :)
A turkish forum might also be of more help :)
