"Television and Consumer Electronics" and "Technology*Home", two of the dwindling number of magazines of interest to technophiles seem to have disappeared from the magazine shelves of W H Smith etc.

They regularly had articles on satellite receiver repairs and feedhunting (Roger Bunney since the early '60s, and who still has a column in Wotsat) and in the former's case TV repairs, that magazine first appearing in the 30's.

Technology*Home appeared to be a rival to T&CE after many of its regular contributors upped sticks after changes to T&CE's format (too many 'company reports', similar to the way TELESatellte has evolved).

Sad to see T&CE disappear, as I have subscribed to it since the late '50s when it was known as Practical Television, then just 'Television'.

T&CA is defintely defunct. I was a subscriber and I got a letter about a month ago saying that they were ceasing publication with immediate effect.

I had to phone up to tell them what they wanted them to do with the balance of my subsciption. A bit rich as it was an 0870 number I had to ring. Why couldn't they just have sent me what they owed?

Which reminds me, I still haven't received a refund yet.

It is always going to be difficult for these type of magazines to survive, as most of the information they contain is available from the web and in many cases far earlier than it would be seen in the magazines.

The Internet isn't foolproof however, there will always be an opening for magazine content that is cleverly written.
I am in two minds however
1) I would rather much of the newsagents pap get removed sooner rather than later, the sheer waste of resources required to pulp/print/package/deliver the glossy page of text to the home makes it a dinosaur for info, and as Rolf confirms, the stuff is always a minimum of three weeks out of date, no good in this day and age., but

2) What happens to the staff that now find themselves on the scrap heap ?
(Is there a second Ark that will take them onto a new world first ?)

This site has plenty of budding authors, ready to engage others with informative text, and any input is to be encouraged to get typing for the benfit of all.

I believe that the statistics are something like, 9 out of 10 magazines fail in the first year. ;)

Recieved a letter today announcing that Television magazine will be relaunched this coming December.

According to the leaflet "I have now bought the title and will be restarting the publication ... later this year". There's no signature anywhere on the leaflet but the website gives the name of Tony Greville as the new boss.

Anyway, further details at _http://www.televisionmagazine.co.uk. If you pay for a subscription by November 26th then you're assured of delivery of the relaunch issue.

There's an option for a downloadable version instead of the printed one. See _http://editions.pagesuite.co.uk/openpagesuite.aspx?pubid=2161 for an old edition for free.

Good news Paul. Hope the editorial staff make a better fist of it than the last lot.

Knew you'd be the first to come back on this Llew!

I hope for that also. You got the impression that the last lot just didn't know what to do with the publication. It just didn't fit in with their "publishing profile" and was treated most shabbily.

One thing I really hope happens this time is that there is bit more sub-editing done this time round. I became fed up of reading press releases that were just printed verbatim instead of being interpreted. Litle slip-ups like color and analog just shouldn't get through.

Oh, and I liked the light-hearted mostly non-technical columns as well. Maybe they'll come back?

Never the same since Les Lawry-Johns hung up his soldering iron :-crying

May need to be of a certain age to appreciate the tussles the old boy had with some of the early beasts that came into his workshop :-rofl2

Plenty of his whimsical jottings in pdf form here -
