Anyone here used them? What do you think? A good idea?

There getting a lot of bad reports but I don't think they are that bad, especially only for a few things when I'm in a hurry.

Paying by card and not having to sign or type a pin still feels a bit disorientating (and dangerous) but I suppose they will eventually get round to putting chip and pin machines on them.

Tried this in our local Safeway (now Morrisons) where you scanned your own goods and payed with card.

Lasted about 6-7months then they were taken out.

Main reason was that they only had one pay point so you had to queue just as long if it was busy.

Have no idea how it works, 'praps you could fill us in. When and how is your card validated? How are you linked to the card used to purchase the goods?

:confused

When you pay you can either use cash or credit/debit card, if you pay by card all you do is swipe it down the side of the monitor, then it spits out receipts. You don’t sign anything or type a pin.

They claim to film the entire system from all sorts of angles, so the only connection between you and the card would be any pictures they have of you using it.

In Safeway you entered the store and they had banks of hand scanners on racks. You swipped your storecard and a light shows you which scanner to take.

Going round the store you scan items and decide to add or subtract - a running total appears on the scanner. When finished you return the scanner to its holder and a printed receipt.

They had a total and barcode. So receipt ask you to have the items scanned. If you decided to pay by card it scanned the barcode and ask for credit card. An assistant was also available who scanned the barcode and took cash or cards.

But, as I say, it didn't last that long.

Sainsburys also have self service tills in some stores, the one I have been to it works by weight of the products so it knows if you are trying to bag stuff you havent scanned, etc.

Payment by cash is obviously straight forward, it just prints out a receipt and gives you some change. When you pay by card, you sign a little screen with a computer stylus thing, like on a PDA. The system then tells you to wait while it alerts an assistant who is monitoring a group of four of these self-service tills to come and check the signature.

The signature checking is a bit of a letdown in my opinion, but i guess until chip and pin is fully used everywhere it'll just have to be done this way.

Wow, I'm getting old.

Like the weighing idea, as long as the check includes the weight of the packaging!

I still find it easier to car-jack people leaving the store. Some things are best done with brute force. O-Ha
