So I had a try of the TBS5927 tuner. Well not really as I plugged it in as per instructions and that was enough for me. There is no way I could put up with the fan noise, a drone that drowned out all other noises from the sat receiver, computer, CCTV receiver and even Dire Straits playing in the back ground. That was it, repacked and done. I read the reviews, some say the fan is noisy but necessary, others say its OKish but for me it spoils the fun of playing with my sat setup. These days of making systems quieter with heat sinks etc I am amazed this is the best they could do. Maybe bigger casing, bigger and slower fan but as it is not for me.

Funnily enough I'm just back from a dish realignment and the rx was a 5927, I concur about the fan noise. It must be the cheapest, smallest thing they could find and is being run flat out, I suggested they extend the USB cable and hide it in a cupboard! It was also VERY slow to respond using DVBdream although Crazyscan seemed to be fine. I'm now off to thaw out

I did think it would be better in the cupboard under the desk but its coax, usb and power supply to run. I also like to see the led's on the unit. Load of hassle so maybe the TBS5520SE is a better choice.

I got mine from Amazon as they are the best for returns, but I love it and it's a keeper.
Already thinking about buying a 2nd one.

I think something is up with DVB Dream, all sorts of issues if you use the BDA, better with StreamReader. However other software seems to be lightning fast such as SmartDVB.

Yes, I did end up using streamreader so I could try the blindscan plugin (which works really well) but even then it's nowhere near as fast as my Prof, lots of spinning circles and 'not responding' pop ups. CS just works without issues.

Yeah that's how it was for me, must be a TBS/BDA thing with Dream.
Try SmartDVB, wayyyyy faster :)

I prefer to use the smaller companies but I admit Amazon are very good for returns. Had an electric kettle from them a few months ago, something she wanted to match the kitchen and Amazon and another store were the only places I could get it. Had it a few months and it developed a leak. Free return to them and the money back as soon as it was in the postal system.

Same here really, but if it's an item I'm not sure will do as it states or have a feeling the retailer will be a nightmare if I get issues I will use Amazon.

Amazon is where I will buy mine from now that I have rebuilt my main desktop PC with 500 GB SSD & 16 GB Ram + a new EVGA 100-B1-0600-KR - 600W 80 Plus PSU the only original component is the ASUS Motherboard,

This leaves my new desktop free for satellite work with the TBS card or USB box of my choice.

USB does have a big benefit, seeing as they are using a really decent host bridge chip in TBS boxes being USB is not a downside.
The main thing is as it's external you are keeping the tuner away from sources of noise from the motherboard and you can put ferrites around cables.

Also you can take it portable with a laptop.

I was against USB at first but because TBS did it properly I'm converted!

Even the PCIe cards are not PCIe native, the use a bridge chip as well.

Yes that seems a good solution the TBS 5927 Professional digital satellite TV Tuner box DVB-S2 TV Tuner USB with the added internal fan could even run off my Sony Laptop with i5 6GB of memory Ram maybe ?
I think the other Desktop with i7 & 8GB Ram may increase to 16GB would be able to handle 4:2:2 better ?

Should run fine on the laptop as well, what gen i5 is it? The iGPU might have hardware h265 etc.

It is about 8 years old so there may be problems using the laptop :(
The Desktop is probably a better bet with i7 only 6 months old as this was my original intention.

Does the laptop have a GPU or does it use the Intel Graphics? It will be fine for SD/HD but might be a bit weak for 4:2:2 or 4K.

I have the 5925 for probably 5 or 6 years. It has no fan and makes no noise. It also has Loop Out which is not on the 5927. I can only report my own experience, which is that it only runs a little bit warm despite the absence of a fan.
