Received my new Dreambox 7000S yesterday afternoon. Because of the prep work I had casually done by reading the tutorials and posts here and keeping notes, I had my Dreambox connected, hard-drive inserted, Hydra image flashed and softcams and keys updated within an hour. So a sincere thanks to everyone. As I embark on my quest I hope in the future to be able to contribute some useful info. myself.
However, I do have one question. If I purchase an official card, how do I tell the channel in question to use the smartcard?

Well done Butterbox always nice to hear a success story. :)

If you put a card in the card slot, the box will look there when anything needs decrypting.

Nice one m8.

The card thing should work as rolfw says. I only really use newcamd, and that has a card server app running all the time which scans both card slots and the serial port (for connection of a phoenix programmer I guess) and will (in theory) detect an inserted card once configured. Check my recent 'how-to upgrade to newcamd 5.24' for more details, and for supported encryption systems.

Other emu's handle I2 better than newcamd V5.24 now I understand.

Let us know how it goes if you try it. I'm contemplating an ART card myself.

HI butterbox, Also just got DB and using Hydra from Multiboot.
Problem I found was using Newcamd 5.24 as default softcam I could not
watch Redlight Irdeto card. With the Hydra image if you have connected it
to the internet you can download and update upto 10 softcams within seconds.
I found that SCAM 31.08 worked but it was trial and error.
You can assign a softcam to a specific channel as required by pressing the blue
button whilst still leaving Newcamd as the default softcam.
Hope this helps!!!!

I read through you guide and it looks fairly clear, however I am a bit confused. My Hydra image already downloaded newcamd V5.24. Do I only need to do it manually if I have a Black Tiger Image? If so, what is the reason for using this image?

PS newcamd V5.24 read an I2 card I borrowed no problem.

Newcamd v5.24, hit blue button and pick your cam to install using the across button. Hit green to install it. When you start your receiver it will come up. ie starting newcamd.

For stability and speed, it's best to use the smallest image you can find. The less code there is running, the less there is to go wrong. Different strokes for different folks. The upgrade guide tells you how to do it at detail level. Once you understand how it works, It'll help you diagnose any problems as well. This is more or less what the control panel in Hydra will do. I actually found Atlantis V1.08 quite stable, but I'm now almost completely cured!

Good to see that newcamd will do some I2 cards. The fact that it doesn't do some comes from their own documentation, along with a longer discussion on the subject.
