You don't need a flying machine to do that, I used to use an old Compaq presario which worked well for that purpose, now I use my desktop with a PCI to PCMCIA card.

valid question M8...depends what 'sat' hardware ye got and what ye want ta do..burn cards and flash cams almost any laptop with serial and USB port on any OS running Wins98 or above will do

most common problem is Dell laptop and Wins 2000 ...flashing CAM via pcmcia and Humax Emu.bin via serial!

would agree with 'rolfw you don't need a flying machine'...but ye will want ta stay up ta date with upgrades ...etc, good mid range machine + 512Mb ram with pcmcia slot, serial and 2 x USB port + built-in Ethernet if ye got a small home network...Toshiba and IBM thinkpad get good reviews!

Duolabs.com...Cas2 + add on ( add on...only if needed) will burn and flash all

Maplins...9D null modem cable will flash the most STB...look at the back of the STB !

good luck... ;)

Sony/Fujitsu are nice laptops, but expensive compared to others

Acer are cheap and cheerful, if you are looking for a budget one this might be the way to go.

I wouldn’t recommend Toshibas, they have a habit of dying and have notorious after sales support. Nitpicking the difference between laptop and portable computer (claiming using a portable computer on your lap is inappropriate use and so not covered by the warranty). Their satellite range is an insult to the word satellite.

I can’t really comment on the others.

I'm in charge of PC purchasing for my company. I always buy from Dell for one simple reason: 3 years Next Business Day Onsite support comes as standard.

I have always found laptops to be very unreliable, whatever the brand. However, when a Dell computer stops working, you call them up and an engineer comes and fixes it the next day.

This probably isn't too important to you, because having spent your own money, you'll be really carefull not to break it. But in a corporate environment, that sort of support is essential.

Our Friend Gerry is quiet right.

Firstly, Depends, to your pocket money.
Secondley, again depends what's your idea of buying the note book.
And at last, buying the finest which is in the articles (I think), Toshiba, Dell, or Compaq.

In the magazines, sites. How many stars they have. the reviews. And...
www.pcadvisor.co.uk or www.whatpc.co.uk
www.computershopper.co.uk
