If I was putting a note on a windscreen I would use large block letters. That would make it easier to read than longhand script.

That was my point men's longhand is invariably untidy

Not invariably. I am a man and my writing is very neat and legible. I only see handwriting from about twenty people in every day life, so I cannot not judge how typical I am of the male species in general. Some women I know have untidy handwriting.
