Three interesting articles today as broadcasters axe services.

First up the fta signal on TV5 Monde has been shut down from 28E.
TV5 MONDE departs from UK satellite & cable: your French alternatives - a516digital

Terrestrial signals in Flanders Belgium have been shut down overnight
Free-to-air terrestrial TV ends in Flanders - a516digital

Switzerland will be axing its terrestrial services next year
(same article as the Flanders news half way down)

By the time the sell off of Free View frequencies to Mobile Broadband next phase is completed,

Free-view viewers will need to re-tune as clearance takes place
region by region between 2017 - 2020,

Where this will end is not known but as Mobile Broadband has a bigger cheque book than Free View has we may end up with just 2 to 3 Multiplexes per region or none at all :(

Interestingly in Australia, Foxtel are planning to do the reverse, namely move the customers who access the service via cable (HFC, Hybrid Fibre Coax, not dissimilar to most cable networks in Europe these days) on to satellite. The reasons for such a move relate to how Foxtel uses Telstra's HFC network which is being gradually replaced with a national NBN network.

EXCLUSIVE: Foxtel migrating all Cable TV customers to Satellite » EFTM

The big problem as the first article states is on how to get the local terrestrial channels to be properly integrated for satellite customers. Not much of a problem on HFC, but not as easy on satellite. My own experience back in June & July out there is that they don't fully integrate it yet, and some are SD only. For example watching the soccer World Cup games on SBS via Foxtel satellite had only an SD option whose picture quality even for SD was rather poor, not too dissimilar to that for the low-budget FTA channels on 28 East back here. On the other hand, the picture via terrestrial reception was HD and very good it was.
