Ive been asked a couple of time what equipment - especially dish size I use for the feeds I report in this section.

The receiver is a standard Dreambox 7020. I only have fta capability so all feeds I report are in the clear unless otherwise mentioned. I only have access to feeds transmitted in the 4:2:0 standard - many are transmitted in 4:2:2 but the DB doesnt resolve these.

As many of you will know I have several dishes in use, but the main ones I get feeds off are:

10E - at the moment I have a second hand fixed 80 cm circular dish in use for 9/10E. This has been installed by myself and after careful tweaking gives reasonable reception in dry conditions. I lose access to many of the lower powered feeds when it rains though. Any feeds on the limit of reception for my 80cm dish is noted in the report.

A 1m dish would be better, but the 80cm one was available when I was setting up. (I will replace the dish with a 1m when I have some money)


16E - I have a fixed 1m dish on 16E and for feeds it performs fairly well in most conditions apart from in heavy rain or snow.

Do you use any software for systematic scan and organizing of found channels?

Since I have dual motorized system, covering 105.5E-30W range in C and Ku, I had a idea to somehow automate it, so system rotates itself automatically, blind scan is completed, and results posted on website. All this without human interception.

No :D No need for me anyway - Im only really interested in any feeds which appear on 9/10E and occasionally on 16E

For the tv channels I mainly use the alphabetic lists on the DB, with a few favourites lists made up for specific purposes.

I just put the commonly used feed frequencies into the 10E frequency list and made a favourite list up which I put all the feeds I find into. A quick flick through the channel list find a good proportion of the new ones.

For feeds uploaded here, I always use my SMW motorised dish. This allows me to span from 57E - 58W.

A WinTV Nova HD using DVBViewer and codecs for 4:2:2 finds the majority of feeds using most flavours of MPEG2 and MPEG4 HD. Low SRs are rarely a problem since swapping from a SkyStar HD2 for the Nova.

I use an Echostar AD3000ip for moving the dish, with a loopthrough to an old analogue spectrum analyser for fine tuning satellites. This is sometimes necessary when locating a rare feed on 58W, as my positioner can lose a few positions hauling back the actuator from this satellite!

I then switch over the cable via an A/B switch to the PC and use Transedit for scanning feeds; I usually have all the most used feeds in Transedit's channel database. I can blind scan a satellite using Transedit, but it usually takes an age, during which the feed may have disappeared.

I then send the result over to DVBViewer for taking a screenshot.

The Dreambox DM600 has a blind scan function although it is a bit slow :eek:

I found my old Technomate TM1000D was OK for feedhunting, not the fastest but it was OK :D

Feeds are usually of high quality as they are normally for re-transmission purposes :D

They have to be good - they're taken by broadcast companies either for direct transmission or editing. That's why many feeds are in 4:2:2.

I have skystar hd2 but it is not good for blind scan. It has actually software blind scan support and it is actually useless.

for new feed hunter, I would strongly suggest a pci card with hardware blind scan chip inbuilt.

I am currently searching for new receiver or pci card for feed hunting.

Depends what you want - Premiership feeds are always secure scrambled, but theres been plenty of African footy on the last few days!

As of 18th September 2010 Im now using a 1m dish on 10E. At the moment it still needs the alignment tweaking a bit but its fairly close.

Ive now also discovered I can watch 4:2:2 via vlc player on my computer Thus I look forward to providing some info about the 4:2:2 feeds around now as well.

I have use several dish receiver combinations to find feed over the last 10 years currently these are my set up's:-
104 cm Gibertini 0.2 Inverto Black Ultra TM6900HD Super+ loop through to AZBox Premium Plus (Both receiver have excellent blind scan capabilities)
88 x 78 cm Raven Mesh dish (88 cm high x 78 cm wide) DarkGold 0.1 Lnb Spiderbox 9000HD loop through to TM1500CI+Super (TM1500 is mainly used to find test carriers on new satellites)

Best Satellite Receivers for Feed Hunting an update,

The top 4 are in my opinion the best for Feed Hunting as they do not overwrite found low symbol rate (SCPC = Single Channel Per Carrier) transponders all have a range of 800 to 45,000 with no errors in found transponders,

1/TM5502HD CI
2/TM5302HD
3/Spiderbox HD9000
4/SpiderboxHD9900

These are good for Feed Hunting but will overwrite some SCPC transponders in close proximity all have a range of 800 to 45,000 with no errors,
5/TM6900HD Super+
6/TM6902HD T2

These are good for Feed Hunting but will overwrite some SCPC transponders in close proximity all have a range of 800 to 45,000 they also have an error when some low symbol rates are found the receiver adds a symbol rate of 45,000,
7/TM5402HD M1
8/TM5402HD M2

Best of the rest:-
9/TM-F3/5 & TM5402HD M3 Good Blind scan but has a data base error that adds more transponders than exists on a satellite 42 east,26 east,16 east are a typical example,

10/AZBox Premuim+ Good but slow blind scan with 4:2:2 capability unfortunately due to the introduction of MPEG-4 4:2:2 codec this receiver is virtually obsolete now,

I have tried a couple of Linux receivers but they are not suitable in my opinion for Feed Hunting the Blind Scans do not pick up all active transponders that the TM5502HD does.
