Apologies for this question which, I suspect, is probably a regular from newbies to this forum.

I have been trying to research my requirements but, TBH, I don't know enough and it is a lot to learn.

Firstly, where I am: have just cancelled the Sky full package (inc multiroom and HD) because a) it's v/expensive b) I object to a company charging me extra to phone their customer support c)The programs are so annoying: an hours documentary prog, after you strip out adverts and recaps is not worth the money they charge. d) I can no longer pause or record on the Sky+ boxes which I paid for (I know I bought the box and need to subscribe to the software).

I have been cut off tonight (back to the freesat only) and am particularly going to miss the documentary section (Discovery/history etc), sport and cartoons + the occasional movie.

What are my option for alternatives?

a) Get a life.
b) Buy a diff sat receiver so I can at least pause and record free to air programs.
c) Get stuff online.
4) Get a satellite system that doesn't just rely on Sky.

Any advice, links etc would be greatly appreciated.

Another way of putting 'it', I suppose is: I want to replace Sky with Sky (or better) at a much lower monthly cost.

Get yourself a Freesat PVR - full recording capability of the free channels without the ongoing payments.

European subscriptions are available but the channel lists are different, and the amount of English is going to be limited unless you buy into one of the more expensive packages.

Regretably if you want a $ly-like service you have to subscribe to $ly. As AS says, your best bet now is a Freesat PVR which will do the recording and pausing that you want without paying a monthly charge.

You won't get the channel variety you used to get but frankly I find that there's barely enough hours in the day to watch all that I record off Freesat and Freeview anyway!

Definately go for a Free to Air box with either an internal Hard Disk drive or USB for recording to an external hard disk.

The thing is with the documentary channels, you get them on other satellites such as hotbird or astra1 but the programming is exactly the same but with another language dubbed over the english or subtitles and the sports and kids are no different (appart from the lack of english audio on the sports channels for EPL)

so you wouldnt gain any new programming by getting a sub on a different bird really you`d just get different adverts lol
