Wanadoo, have just had an ad pulled by the ASA - for promoting an 8meg service that only 5% of the UK population would be able to have. To be fair, Wanadoo did explain that unless your house is the local exchange - then 8meg speeds were highly unlikely.

But, why do these operators want to squeeze more out of old technology? Seems to be popular thing these days. Why, when you have squeezed the last drop of juice out an orange - do you look to the peel and pith for more??

ADSL2 and ADSL2+ are new standards available NOW. ADSL2 upto 12meg within 1300m, ADSL2+ upto 24meg within 900m. (Figures are approx).

Indeed a local operator here in Germany (Alice) is now offering 16meg for little under €50.00. Clearly this is ADSL2+. Alice is an exception, though. The 'premium' speed from Deutsche Telekom remains 6meg; while it appears that other operator's are pushing 6meg as their 'standard' speed.

In this respect, the UK is certainly running at a slow pace when it comes to ADSL.

Just in case anyone was interested: I have 2meg ADSL (no limits) for €44.00 mth or GBP 30.00.

Have Fun,

Mark.

My 2 Meg connection is £25 per month without limits, actually runs at that speed as well. :) Unfortunately only a quarter meg upstream.

Does that include your phone connection?

Mine per month is €17.00 for Line, €17.00 for 2meg DSL, €9.95 for unlimited use.

No, the phone is separate, but the 8 meg when it arrives includes the phone for a little more, I'm only a couple of Ks from the exchange, so should be quite fast. :)

So, for the hell of it what do you pay all-told; i.e., line rental, DSL, etc (not including offers or calls ;-).

Assuming Wanadoo are using 'standard' ADSL kit, I think 8meg is pushing it. 5% of the population is hardly fair. Germany favouring 6meg guaranteed; i.e., upto 3.5Km - is attainable by most.

I'd be interested to know what your max speed is in the end.

You may find this chart useful.

We should have mentioned some companies here I think - or, maybe you guys already know the best deals :D

Prices seem very similar to Germany?

Think yourself lucky. My line is maxed out at 576kbs :(

(6 miles from the exchange at the end of a ratty length of overhead cable....)

9Km:mad: I guess the Border's are beyond the border's for a reasonable ADSL speed. according to that funky chart (see earlier link) even ADSL2+ falls apart after about 6.5Km. I feel for you. DSL by SAT ??

Huh? I hope you only pay for the slower speed

Dial-up is a good last-resort. I say that, but, my current PC doesn't have a dial-up MODEM onboard:cool:

There is no way I am going back to a 20minute download of a 10sec free mature content clip. DSL, at least lets you do that in an instant and throw it away in about the same amount of time.

And dial-up doesn't come with a 'flat' rate. Your mate's telephone bill will be testimony to how much he's online, lol.

Still, if it blocks calls from the inlaws, its probably worth the expense.

[edit] sorry, forgot everyone has a mobile these days :-(

Just read this story in the Guardian. It may offer some hope for those who are not getting the best from ADSL due to their location or line problems.

WiMaX (wireless broadband) seems pretty fantastic on paper - 15Km (NLOS - no line of sight) and 50Km (LOS).

Check out this WiMaX White Paper

Don't be too concerned, it isn't that long ago when most Europeans were only on dialup, so whilst you may be behind at the moment, it shouldn't take too long to catch up.
