..from your reply I'm guessing ...errrr..
not a good idea then..

They're great if you have a central heating system that doesn't date back to the dinosaur age (this house has old manual valves, old non-efficient radiators, a slow leak somewhere that I can't find and air is getting in and cocking up the system pressure), but to be honest, radiators with thermostatic valves where you can set the temperature on a room-by-room basis are much better than a wireless 'stat, as with that one of ours, it tends to cause hotspots & notspots, my bedroom for instance is a hotspot (pipes run from the boiler under the floor, so I basically have crude under-floor heating!!), but the living room is freezing most of the time, with proper thermostatic valves it'd be a lot easier to control the flow to get it where it needs to be the most... :)

Once that's done, a simple digital timer thermostat in one room is sufficient as, in theory, all the rooms will have their own local temperature control... :)

Gotcha ..
but I need to have at least one thermostat to control the boiler ...and mine is defective ..
So I was considering replacing with a wireless one rather than just replacing the broken wired analogue with the same ..
That way I can choose to control the boiler from the room I spend most time in ..rather than my cold front room where the thermostat is currently located.
ie ..portability..
My main concern is how well the wireless signal penetrates the brick walls..

Well the wireless signal for ours works throughout the house (it's only a brief pulse of signal to tell the receiver to turn off or on), it's just one of those things where once it's set, it's no different to a manual analogue one, just requires batteries ever year or two...

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Have had failures of both traditional analogue (mechanical failure of the bimetalic strip) and wireless (who know why those failed?) stats - nothing lasts for ever.

Last failure was about 5 months ago with the 2nd wireless one, and I have replaced it with a Drayton Digistat +3RF, which I have found to be far the easiest to programme (some are real pigs in that respect) and then adjust daily if required - IIRC, about £100 from Screwfix. Generally the batteries in the remote units last at least a couple of years, and the Drayton is good because it uses AAs (some use CR2032s, and you only get 12-18 months from those).

Biggest hassle was installing and wiring up the receiver/switch box between the supply to the boiler and the boiler itself, but that was partially because of how the previous wireless stat box was installed by the guys who installed the boiler (Bosch Worcester Greenstar 30Si).

FWIW ...I have installed the RDH10RF wireless thermostat receiver for the boiler (approx 1 metre proximity) ... this morning ..
The room unit is totally portable and can either be wall mounted or has a flip out table stand..
The units appear to be talking to each other and walls dont appear to be an issue ..
so far that is ..
How sensitive the room unit is ...lap of the gods..
One can only increase or decrease temp in half degrees ...and there is a small lag ..
The receiver also has an overide button ...and a learning/pairing button..
I'll see how well it responds tonight I guess when the clock kicks in on the boiler ..and the temp drops ..which it surely will..
..got it set for 19 deg C activation which should be adequate for comfortable living.

The Siemens RDH10RF
Not a complex device ..but then I rely on the boilers built in clock ..so only temp control needed..

Sorry to have asked a stupid question - somehow missed the info in your previous post :(

Further to my post ..
I have additional info ..
This thermostat works ok communication wise and have now set an optimum temp of 20deg C ..
Why ..?
well ...cos I was cold ..
The unit lacks accuracy imo..
having a 1 to 1.5 degree operating range ..
Set at 20 ...it kicked in at well 20 after 15 seconds ..but did not turn off the boiler until 21 degrees was attained ...then did not turn on the boiler again until the temp dropped to 19.5 ..
again with a 15 second delay roughly ..
So in conclusion ..a sluggish response with an operating window of a full degree -ish
Are they all like this ?
I guess a direct comparison with an analogue unit would be desireable ..but that would be tricky to achieve.
If any of you guys use a similar device I'd like to know how mine compares ??

The Drayton one I fitted generally kicks in a second or two after I raise the requested temperature, and seems to have a control window of about +/- 0.5C , i.e, raise/lower by that amount and the boiler can be heard to kick in/cut out - although, obviously, it takes some time for the additional hot water to circulate in the system when the boiler kicks in.

The Screwfix reviews of the Drayton unit are here - although the price appears to have risen by about £30 since I bought ours at the beginning of October last year:eek:
