My Satellite Setup
LG 49" Smart 4k TV with Freesat Tuner
My Location
Longtown Cumbria.
Hi Guys, New to the forum, after going it alone for 2 week ive decided i need real advice and info.
So my setup is - Lg 49" UH620V Smart 4k Tv, with cable, Satellite and terrestrial tuner, Tv only has 1 F Plug satellite socket.
My dish is my old Sky Plus HD dish which was still on the wall with a twin output LNB, definitley not Sky Q, i was on Sky Plus about 5 year ago. The Twin cable is connected to the underneath of the LNB, the 2 outputs are marked V and H, i assume thats vertical and horizontal.
With just one cable selected, which im told is fine, i tune the satellite on my TV, it had 2 options, FREESAT, which relys on postcode etc, and Other Operators, I have tried both, on a freesat search it only shows it has picked up 152 channels, and some radio channels, on a blind search it picks up more than that.
When tuning in FREESAT, the channels either show NO SIGNAL, or INVALID SIGNAL with a black screen and some little graphic bouncing around, Nothing works going down that route.
On a blind search, it does pick up a few free channels, but the rest seem to be made up of Sky scrambled channels and some foreign channels.
Just to add, when i scan freesat, it does not show you what satellite it is searching, the default appears to be 28.2e, However on a blind search you can select the satellite(s) you want to search, so my settings are 28.2e, 9750/10600, LNB power on, Unicable off.
Im getting nowhere and starting to think this is a waste of time, does anyone have any idea what im doing wrong??
Ive just completed another blind search, Channel one is now STN Bangla UK, 2 is CHSTV, 3 = Ahlebait tv, 4 = Xpanded Tv 2 etc etc.
Also, both scans, freesat and other operators, also do pickup and show the correct EPG.
#HELP!!! please, before i throw it all in the bin............

Hi @Gazza35 , welcome to the Forum! I think you better change LNB to universal, then both polarities will be picked up on your TV.

What you mean buy another LNB, i know the LNB is working fine, tho it did cross my mind if V and H meant both cables had to be connected, but i was then advised by a sky bloke that its only a recorder that would need both cables, and as mines a single input tv, 1 cable is ok just to watch freesat. Im so confused, im not understanding what is needed, i just now manually tuned 10714/2200 on 28.2E and it now picks up this - 1 - Abu Dhabi tv. 2 - Freesports scrambled. - 3 - Premier 2. 4 - 4music. 5 - Magic and so on. Is my dish even pointing at the right satellite. im at a complete loss where to go from here, and i dont want to spend loads of money to get nowhere.

Your LNB settings must be off, as the channels, you've listed, are on 11626 V 22000

I think somebody has replaced the LNB for a Sky Q one without telling you.

Fit a Universal LNB.

The one you have is not correct. However many outputs a Universal LNB has, they are all identical and not marked H and V.

Cheap as chips and easy to change.

Ahhh ok, well it must be very old, again tho, it is not a Sky Q LNB, i know what they are i have one in my toolbox, and its not that, its the old half oval pointing forward like a gun type. So, back to LNBs guys, im assuming its shot, kapputt, would this be adequate for the job ?

And as it has 4 outputs, do i just connect the 1 wire as thats all i need for my tv, or do i still connect both??

This one will do. And, yes, just one cable needed here.

Underneath where the F plugs connect to. Having looked online theres a lot of LNBs have same on. but ive figured the dish and lnb are where they should be, however as soon as i select astra 2 sat, it immediatley sets itself to10848 or something instead of 10714, so theres obviously something not right at dish end. However as it stands i do have a load of english speaking channels at moment from wherever theyre being picked up, including Kerrang, so thats a result at least, it will do the job for now till i get a new lnb, one i wanted isnt in stock at screwfix lol, typical.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Since you have an old Sky dish, the latest Sky LNBs from Screwfix might not fit.

Check the diameter of the existing LNB clamp before you buy a new LNB as you might need an adapter to fit it - see here for some options, including both LNBs (quads seem to be £13.95 delivered, so a quid cheaper than Screwfix ATM) and adapters will cost you a few quid on top of that, but only a relatively small amount more.

That's a Wideband, they have barely visible H and V markings on the bottom of the slide cover on the side of each feed, as someone said earlier, someone has changed the LNB without asking you, are you in a block of apartments, or where there are several dishes?

Possibly, but its not sky Q for sure, i know the difference and whatever else it may be, its the same LNB on the dish that was there when i moved into this apartment 8 years ago, so it well and truly pre-dates the Q system. Didnt know they had wideband LNBs back then, its on a sky dish and works fine with a sky Plus box attatched, it does pick up all the sky channels when tuned in, however they are of course scrambled as its a pay service. Would the LNB have any other uses, Example = Pointing it at a seperate foreign satellite to pick up other channels, like Hotbird or something@?

Just to update - - Today i climbed the ladder and took down the LNB to replace it when new one arrives. you were right it is wideband, to be exact it is a Skt Wideband ODU LNB. What would that have been used for back in 2011??, or was this the early models of Q LNBs as we now know, and, im assuming this LNB will not pick up Freesat ever. Good job i ordered a universal. It was definitley only a Plus box my missus had then when it was fitted tho.

Good, now that's cleared up what was on the roof.

A serial number on the side of the LNB should determine the date of manufacture, though from memory it all kicked off four years ago.
